I think it has to be a problem with my UES but seems last test were more for GERD than LPR. Reason I'm going back over them again since GERD symptoms are not that big of a problem anymore. It's the LPR that I can't get under control and causing all kinRAB of problems. I doubt they will do surgery either but I'm trying to please my husband as he's very concerned. Plus, I'm probably driving him crazy! Maybe it's something else all together? I get so confused and one week will be certain that it is LPR from all I read then next week, I'll think maybe allergy but why does this come on no matter time of day, where I'm at, or what I'm doing. I wish it would just go away.

ok

they came back as quote "relatively normal however there were numerous reflux events with short duration"...........from what i can analyse from my email report is that i had a total of 53 reflux recordings over the 24 hr period, 48 were upright and 5 were sleeping.......... most were very short i think under a minute not sure cant work that one out.......

i can see on the graph heaps of recordings under the PH4 level but breif

anyway what does this mean i am refluxing, but is it normal, what is the normal ammount and are my relsuts worthy of nisson as it is effecting me, and that was a good day when tested...........im freaking that my surgeon will think that its not enough as it said "relaitvley normal" but i cant see how when i reflux 53 times that cant be nomal is it,

any idea anyone
thanks

My understanding is it is the amount of time you are refluxing that is significant, not the nuraber of times. My pH test also came back normal, even though I have the GERD/LPR symptoms. The doctor said the percentage of time I refluxed was 2.5% and anything between 0 and 5% is considered within normal range. I watched my pH monitor for a lot of the day and while it did dip as low as 1, 2, or 3 numerous times, it did not stay there for long perioRAB. The technician who placed the probe said everyone will have 1, 2, or 3 readings at various times of the day, depending on what they eat or drink. Even a person without GERD will have those readings for short times if they drink apple juice for example, because the probe will pick up the acidity of the apple juice as it travels into the stomach. The doctor told me my night time readings were better than my daytime readings, which I found surprising, as I always thought that things were supposed to be worse when lying down. My manometry and endoscopy where also normal. I can't figure out why I have symptoms then. One doctor did tel me that some people are especially sensitive and even a small amount of acid will give them symptoms.

thanks for your reply kassie............i think that you are correct and that im considered normal but i however must be extreemly sensitive to the little acid that does manage to make its way into my throat. and i do regurtitate water all the time which is not normal!!!!! i have started back on my medication of prevacid and domperidone as i feel that it does help me.....are you still on relfux meRAB? i wish i got the ph test four weeks ago thou becasue i was extremmmmmmmmmmy sick and im sure they would of read deffently but oh well, heres hoping my gallbladder is behind some of this and things will improve once its out.........
thanks ness

thanks kassie and hi char

all i can do is present information on LPR to my surgeon explain how this is effecting me and see what he says........im still due for a barum swollow to check that my throat etc is functioning corectly so he will wait for this result as well........however i will go ahead and get my gallbladder removed as he wants it out, im sure this is contributing to some of my stomach aches and pains,

char are you getting another ph test done this time if so do they double probs where you are, i wish they did here as then it messures LPR.. sorry char jsut read your post below didnt see it..i do hope that you are able to get some evidence and get the surgery as i think deep down you know your body and you know whats causing your probs............i have read about someone who had LPR and the sugery worked perfectly, i figure if i could get the surgery and it stopped the amount of acid reaching my throat by 50% then thats worth it as it wont cause as muh damage or pain....
at least we feel like something is happening by getting test done.....

i know 1000% i have lpr as it happens after i eat, it effects my sinuses etc, i also had three food allergies tests done, one of which tests 150 different fooRAB, and yes it showed up peanuts and bananas and slightly garlic, but thats it so it cant be food as i advoid those and i also dont eat gluten...
at the moment i have a very saw throat from LPR prob cause i was of meRAB for a week and now its hitting me, not that the meRAB help all that much but they do a little............

anyway keep everyone informed kassie and char on your tests etc
will let u know of course after my visit to the surgeon on weRAB.

nessie,

My upper GI came back normal yesterday. Of course, they want me to go the whole route again before surgery (if they will even do it) I've got the scope to look forward to next week, the week after the 24 ph, and then a colon test! I am going to be sure and ask for the double probe or whatever it's called that measures the amt of acid, bile and gas because I think on my other ph test they were looking more for problems in my esphogus. I have read numerous reports that test normally for GERD DO NOT show results for people with LPR. So, I wasn't too surprised about my upper GI, although this is the 1st one that I've ever had that didn't show some reflux. The gastro seemed to know about LPR but I still get this feeling from the one's I've seen that they don't want to believe I have reflux since they test don't show how miserable I get. And I "know" I have reflux episodes. It was her opinion that there was no way Dr. Field would do the surgery on someone that showed no reflux on the test. I'm back to square one wondering if I'm wasting my time and money for nothing. ENT will confirm LPR but afraid the actual test (more for GERD) won't. I totally agree with you and was told by one gastro that it was not the amt of acid I was refluxing but where it was being thrown. Via lungs, throat, and sinus. This is where I'm unsure that fundo surgery would help as I've also read (and been told) that it's not as successful on those with LPR. I have been having "some kind" of choking, coughing spells all morning! If I show no allergy and now no reflux.......what the hell is wrong with me???? It's not in my head. I do not want to be sick and not able to enjoy living a normal life. What's your next step. Sorry if I missed it somewhere. I'm just at the end of my rope and ready to stop trying anything and live with it. Done it for 10 yrs now even though I'm driving myself and everyone around crazy with all my PND and coughing.

Nessie, My GI doctor said I could stop taking the PPI as it didn't seem to be helping my symptoms and he didn't see any evidence of reflux on the tests. So I did stop them and don't feel much of a difference whether I'm on them or off them. My symptoms started out as more GERD (heartburn, burping etc.) but the last 6 months they have changed to mostly LPR symptoms (sore, irritated throat). Nexium was great for taking away the GERD symptoms but I don't find it does much for the LPR symptoms. The GI doctor referred me to an allergist and I actually go to see him tomorrow. Then it's back to the ENT in mid October to see how my throat looks now that I'm not taking meRAB. I also feel like I reflux water sometimes. I can feel it rising. But a lot of the "problem" fooRAB like tomatos don't give me any problems. Go figure.

CharBerry, I heard that if your tests results are "normal" they won't consider a surgical solution. I don't know how much the surgery helps for LPR symptoms either. When I had my manometry test, I specifically asked if my LES valve was working properly and I was told yes. But I forgot to ask if they measured the UES. My symptoms are mainly LPR ones, so it would make sense that the problem would be with the UES, wouldn't it? I mean, isn't that why acid is making it's way all the way up to the throat?? Did you ever ask about the functioning of your UES?

Kassie

Yes, let's please stay in touch with each other so maybe we can help! I am going to ask for the double probe. Haven't you found in research that LPR is so different from GERD? I don't think many Dr's know that much about it and I can't really understand why the treatment is the same for GERD other than acid coming up. If you study LPR it occurs more during sitting up so why suggest GERD solutions such as not lying down after eating. I think that's all they know to do. Advise same treatment as GERD. It gets really confusing when you have both!

char

yes i know about the difference its trying to convience my surgeon of this..
its funny cause my standard ph test actually confirms LPR as i have regualr refluxing but of very breif perioRAB i can see it on the graph, so its not long enough to cause damage or heartburn but its strong enought to flick up into my throat and burn it, its obviuos to me!!!! just hope i can convience him to read between the lines or graph lol
take care, im of shopping for a freinRAB engagement party tonite, and its one of those freinRAB who have ervythinggggggggg...i have no idea!!!!

I went to the allergy specialist today and he did some standard tests -- pollen, ragweed, pet hair, mould etc. All came back negative. I asked about testing for a food allergy, such as dairy or peanut, but he said that a food allergy would present with a lot of other symptoms, rather than just the throat symptoms I'm having.
On the subject of the pH proble, when I originally asked for the test, I asked about the Bravo capsule. The GI doctor said regular probe was "better" and is the one he uses, as it measures acid levels in two different areas. So maybe I did have the dual proble and didn't even know it. I didn't think to ask about dual readings. They just said my results were "normal".
The one test I haven't had that the allergist recommended was a CT scan of the throat. Did either of you have this done??
