Just watched a Jonathan Creek (The Curious Tale of Mr Spearfish) where Maddie gets trapped in a BMW and escapes at the BP petrol station. Shocked to see how cheap petrol was just a few years ago..69.9...now its 116.9!!!
 
You have to appreciate that these costs are relative.

When I was seventeen in the late fifties and bought my first car, in the budget, petrol went up to 20p a gallon and best bitter up to 10p a pint. This proportional difference has been maintained by successive governments during the succeeding years.

I still remember the prank I think it was on a very early Central News which they pulled on motorists when we switched from gallons to litres, they were charging people
