Petco killed my fish?

did you not use quarantine tank for at least 2 weeks? if not, it's no one's fault but your own. don't trust *any* pet store to have disease free fish. even if they taken the most amazing care of their fish, the shipments can still be bad. always quarantine!

no, pet stores do not quarantine their fish. do you realize the resources they would need for that? do you see all those fishtanks in petco? they'd need another set of all those with a separate filtering system in a back area of the store. that would be double all the care, and let me tell you (I worked at petsmart before...) it takes a loooong time to change the water and scrub algae in all those tanks. and be it's the fore you bash a pet store for having dead fish, think of how many fish they are shipped each week. think of the process of being bagged, shipped, and put in completely new water. even pet stores who keep their fish in perfect conditions will lose fish. now, imgine working at a pet store. every time you get a chance to relax someone else wants another fish or wants to know where this is or that is or how to care for this... you barely get a chance to breathe on some days, scooping deads *must* be done when no customers are around so it doens't look bad, and customers are *always* there.

so sorry, but it's the fishkeeper's responsibility to quarantine. if you decide not to, losing your fish is a chance you take... sorry.

however, most pet stores do have a back room where they quarantine small pets like hamsters, birds, and reptiles.

oh gee, i cannot tell you how much i hate petco's fish. i used to go there several years back but their fish always ended up dying or getting sick. today i went with my boyfriend and i went over to see the fishies and saw sooooo many dead already in the tank and other fish picking at them and the employees weren't doing anything! in fact, the little tanks they use when they get your fish were hanging on the side of the tanks and there were multiple dead fish in them just lying there getting rotten. i was totally grossed out when i saw it and didn't get anything from them.

I told myself I would never buy from Petco again but I went in to one for the first time in years and the tanks were pristine.I asked and they told me the got a new fish specialist and they had been doing a good job maintaining the tanks.
I bought a red tailed female Guppy.I brought her home and she started acting weak and closing her fins like she was sick or nervous.Three days later 3 of my males died out of the blue and others are acting tired or sick. She is still kicking but this is the first problem I had in 10 years.I knew I shouldnt have messed with success let alone from Petco.I went back to Petco today and that tank had dead Guppies in it,they looked like they crocked the same way mine did.

What could cause this so quickly?
You righ tI should have quarantined. Thanks
I am the one usally telling everyone all fish have something. But I should have thought first. No excuse.
My 3 males died 3 days after I introduced her, they were younger than her so maybe they were more succeptible.

Doen't Petco quarantine before adding fish to their tanks.
I just came back from Petsmart too and their tanks were worse the poor feeder guppies were amaciated and half were dead. They had sick fish and fin rot in at least a 3rd of the tanks.

I am usually hesitant to blame the pet store, especially when the deaths occur in fish that were yours for some time, and the fish you bought is still alive.

It's difficult to determine cause of death without knowing tank details.
Tank size?
Stocking?
Results from a water test?
General age of the guppies?
Any visual signs of distress on your original guppies?

Ugh...I hate that. I had a great collection of fish going for over a year and did the same thing. I couldn't resist a simple guppy from Petco and BAM, my whole tank's screwed up and I've got dead fish. This seems to be an ongoing problem with Petco. I don't know what the answer is.

Not all Petco's fault...you should have quarantined that fish.

It probably came in carrying some sort of bug, or else your other fish shouldn't have died, assuming water conditions etc were good.
