did you not use quarantine tank for at least 2 weeks? if not, it's no one's fault but your own. don't trust *any* pet store to have disease free fish. even if they taken the most amazing care of their fish, the shipments can still be bad. always quarantine!
------
no, pet stores do not quarantine their fish. do you realize the resources they would need for that? do you see all those fishtanks in petco? they'd need another set of all those with a separate filtering system in a back area of the store. that would be double all the care, and let me tell you (I worked at petsmart before...) it takes a loooong time to change the water and scrub algae in all those tanks. and be it's the fore you bash a pet store for having dead fish, think of how many fish they are shipped each week. think of the process of being bagged, shipped, and put in completely new water. even pet stores who keep their fish in perfect conditions will lose fish. now, imgine working at a pet store. every time you get a chance to relax someone else wants another fish or wants to know where this is or that is or how to care for this... you barely get a chance to breathe on some days, scooping deads *must* be done when no customers are around so it doens't look bad, and customers are *always* there.
so sorry, but it's the fishkeeper's responsibility to quarantine. if you decide not to, losing your fish is a chance you take... sorry.
however, most pet stores do have a back room where they quarantine small pets like hamsters, birds, and reptiles.
