"Persepolis" - Talkback (Spoilers)

I saw it two weeks ago at the Detroit Film Theater and thought it was simply fantastic. :)

My favorite movie of the year for 2007 was one I saw in January (Children of Men), and 2008 looks like it may be the same case.

I've told everyone I know to go and see it.

Ed Liu has now reviewed it for Toon Zone News. The splash image probably tells you what he thought of it.

At the risk of sounding like I'm jumping on the band-wagon, I really want to check this movie out now. It just sounds like it's got so much to offer, and I want to experience it as soon as I can.

Sorry to bump this thread, but i saw this today (just came out in the UK).

Packed cinema.... (hah! Me and a middle aged woman. Although it was the 11AM showing)

Great film. Really should of got the Academy Award for Best Animated Film.

Oh and they showed the dubbed version. Nice that a couple of the original French VAs redid their roles in English!

hm, forgot about this thread. i did see Persepolis sometime ago, the last day it showed in Charlotte...and I too was the only one in the theatre other than an old woman. This film is simply brilliant, I need to watch Ratatouille again to do a fair comparison but either way, both are extremely high achievments in the art of animation. The only difference is that Persepolis went in a direction not often seen while Ratatouille is reminicent of Disney classics.

I got a chance to see this yesterday. It was dubbed with American actors (Sean Penn and Iggy Pop, amongst others). As someone who is half-Iranian, I found the American voices slightly jarring, it didn't really work.

That said, the animation is excellent. I especially liked the bit with the British guy bribing the Shah and the section in which she revises her account of her boyfriend.

It really gets across the sense of repression in Iran and the hardship an Iranian might face in the West. I'd have liked a little more politics/ depth, but -- for an animation movie -- it's a milestone.
