Periodic abstinence? Practicing abstinence?

Me and my boyfriend of over a year have been sexually active, but recently became more involved with God and our faith in Him. We aren't sure what to do because we feel as though there is no turning back, and sadly we are kind of afraid to give up sex thinking that it might ruin our relationship in some way. We do love each other very much and we are both willing to give up sex for periods of time, or even until marriage. We do not rely on sex to keep us occupied, we have many many things in common.
I am just looking for someone who has gone through the same experience? Or has any insight on my situation?
