Perfecting Perfection

Seems most of the current releases are re-makes. I can understand it when there is something wrong with the original - black and white, low budget, whatever - but why do they keep remaking films which could never possibly be improved.

I still cannot believe they remade Flight of the Phoenix. The original was the most perfect enemble acting achievement in movie history. Sure, Attenborough and James Stewart were superb, but so were Ian Bannen and ALL of the other actors.

This week I get a chance to compare Thomas Crown Affair remake with my Steve McQueen version. It cannot be as good, because only the original could be as good, the makers were onto a loser when they started. Crazy.

Doesnt anyone write plots anymore? We need some new ones desperately.

People will go and watch remakes, as they seem familiar.

Look at how films like (yes i'm on one about this today) Garden State and Sideways, and check their results next to remakes, and sequels, and prequels of mostly poor to average quality.

it is a bit difficult to write a new plot when every situation every idea has more or less been ocvered at some point. they can only keep rehashing stories to make money. it will get to the point where they will have cvered all stories and will start again with the re-makes. Lord of the rings remkae in the year 2075 anyone

Are you not looking forward to the forthcoming 'Casablanca' remake then? Come on it'll be great! Orlando Bloom and Scarlett Johansson? Dynamite! And the good news is it'll be in colour this time (if black and white's so good why don't they use it for every film huh?). I hear they've sexed the whole thing up. In the original Bogie doesn't like the Nazis much but he doesn't really do a lot about it. In the new one Orlando kicks some 3rd Reich ass and there's a great CGI-ed tank battle in the desert. It's all quite tasteful really, I would have updated the whole thing so it's set in Baghdad. 50 Cent could have played Sam and done a rap version of As Time Goes By and Rick could have had a sidekick, a little Iraqy boy who's lost a leg maybe. At first he's sick of the kid hopping round after him but later he learns to love that little guy...

Vinnie, ta for a da info, that's a remake that can be justified, as you say, black and white original. Not sure about the rewrite of the Bogie part though, not a great fan but I always thought what made him endearing, and easy to identify with was the very fact that he was NOT a hero, just trying not to upset either side whilst secretly wishing ill on the nazis. If they try to make him a Tom Cruise Topgun, it will kill it.

Sorry G The T, I was totally lying but, hey, aren't you glad I was?

I do really love the original, like you say the main character isn't a hero (and then by the end he is, I'm filling up now). If anyone remakes that film they should eat s**t and die!

Looking forward to serenity that's a new idea, based on Joss Whedons firefly series and imo the series was fab though never picked up, though i am a browncoat and will plug the film at every opportunity in the hopes that they will make more or commission a series :D

Most re-makes never bare up to the scrutiny of the originals :D
