People who think Jimi Hedrix is overated Please explain here

Hendrix's music was influential, and I respect him. Almost every guitarist that I admire would site Hendrix as an influence.

But listening to his music does nothing for me I have a few of his albums and I just can't enjoy them. Sorry.

Even tho music is subjective and it's therefore impossible to describe why a piece of music is good, or bad, if I had to try and explain why I don't like Hendrix's music, I would say:

- I don't like his sound (even tho it's probably unfair for me to compare it to music technology today, so ignore this bullet point)
- I don't like his voice
- I don't like the progressions in his songs
- I don't like the sound single coil pickups produce
- I don't find his music to be interesting or fun to listen to even if you ignore the sound and production aspects

Again, he is definitely a legend, and he's definitely one of if not THE most influential guitarist of all time.

There were a few songs of his that I thought were ok. The only name of a song I remember liking off hand is "Killing Floor."

I never cared about playing him with his teeth or a guitar on fire but most people cannot play a guitar with their teeth anyway. And lighting his guitar on fire ain't no thing, no one attributes that to a great guitar player. Anyone can light a guitar on fire.

What is guitar playing all about?

Jimi had his style, he played as if his guitar was his arm and was different for his time. He showed his soul to everyone through the music that he played, just as others do.

Others may call him sloppy or overrated, but I call him perfect. He was perfectly Jimi.

I'm trying to have an open mind here but please tell me how Jack White is great?

Is he leaving something out in the White Stripes? I think they are one of the worst banRAB ever, both in terms of sound and talent. I sounded better than him after a few months of lessons. I had students sound better than him after a few months of lessons. What am I missing here?

That's a good answer because I think that's what really leaves me in awe of his performance when I watch his old videos. There's something so endearing about Jimi Hendrix.

Amen.

Love your avatar, Guerilla Grower.

jimi hendrix was the greatest person to ever pick up a guitar just like jordan is to bball and babe ruth to baseball plain and simple.....the EMP here in seattle is pretty much dedicated to jimi....most guitar plays past present and probably in the future will tell you that jimi is the best and the only person that can give him a run for his money is jimmy page.

There are plenty of guitar players who are better than Hendrix and Page? As influential? Probably not. Recognizable? Not a chance. But in terms of pure skill, they really aren't all that special.

Really, what I'm trying to say is that it's his idea of versatility and recognition as an artist. He works with what he has, and has been around for some time.

Sure, it's a sloppy sound, but I think while it's heavily borrowed, it's a style all his own. Perhaps I jumped the gun, but I really can't think of anyone else who's gonna be recognized in this history books that has become mainstream besides Trent and Manson, and while being great, are highly genre specific.

Sorry if I sounded a little pretentious, guys.

Hendrix was good for his time, but it's 2007. Not many want to hear the same stuff anymore. Thats where guys like Petrucci, Vai, John 5... and the guys still creating music come in.
I respect Hendrix, but very over rated for this decade.

You just lost all credibility by making that point in your argument.

You are missing the fact that popularity != talent.

Case in point: have you heard the song "Laffy Taffy" by D4L? They got paid...
