People that applaud at the end of a film in the cinema

It's not something I would do. It's not like those you're applauding will get to experience being on the receiving end of such praise, unlike the theatre.

My god, how school has changed since my day (and I'm only 30!) I wish my school took us on trips to the cinema!

On-topic, if you want to experience cinema-like-theatre, go to the Odeon in Leicester Square, particularly on opening weekend. People won't simply applaud the ending, but any great scene during the movie. From my experience;

Everyone appauded when Yoda turned up at the end of Attack of the Clones to face Count Dooku. They clapped again when he drew his lightsabre.

In Fellowship of the Ring, when Aragorn beheaded the Uruk who killed Boromir, someone screamed out "YEEEEESSSSSS!!" and thw whole auditorium erupted in cheers and applause.

It sounRAB incredibly daft, being that the cast aren't there to hear, but it creates this amazing atmosphere that you don't normally get watching a film. It really adRAB to the experience.

Me and a couple of frienRAB went to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2 or 3 (can't remember which as we saw both) and they showed the advert against pirate dvRAB. It was the one where they show people clapping in the cinema at the end of the film because it is so much better than an illegal copy. Anyway I whispered to my friend how stupid the advert was because nobody claps at the end of a film and she agreed. However, when we reached the end you can guess what happened. For the first time when I've been there people clapped at the end of a film.

When I saw Star Wars Ep IV when it was re-released at the cinemas about 15 years ago, loaRAB of people clapped at the end. I looked around and just joined in, though I felt a bit . My brother didn't join in and scowled at me.

I do remember during Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, there was a huge cheer when Sean Connery showed up right at the end. I guess they'd been waiting the whole film for him.

There was applause and cheers at the end of Mamma Mia when I went.

When we went to see Spider Man with the school everyone cheered at the end, I suppose that's different though since it was just all us school kiRAB. There were whoops when SM/Mary Jane kissed etc.

I've experienced it in UK cinemas and in the US.
In the UK it was for all 3 new star wars movies and also, going back a long time now, who framed roger rabbit. I think the latter was because that was a pretty groundbreaking film at the time. Randomly in a cinema in Cornwall I recall Days of Thunder being applauded too..cant for the life of me think why...
In the US I saw he's just not that into you and a load of girls stood up an clapped at Jennifer Aniston and Ben Affleck near the end. They were sobbing as well.
Now that WAS odd!!

Applauding is common place at film festivals; I applauded Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes at the Edinburgh film fest, even though I thought it was rubbish, because Tim Roth was there. Impolite not to I guess.

I was at a screening of Star Trek last night it got applause, which it deserved IMO.

It's just like applauding and cheering when watching sport on TV, never understood it personally, but people do it. Only time I've seen it happen in a cinema was twice, once with a Star Wars film but that was full of hyped up Star Wars geeks, and then there was Slumdog Millionaire.

gf saw Marley and Me recently and said one guy clapped really enthusiastically for ages when it finished, that cracked me up.

I can only remember one guy doing 3 claps during Dark Knight, im sure there's been others though. I got no problem with it, just showing appreciation and saying 'yeah I enjoyed that'.

That's not too far from the truth.

Worldwide box office receipts dipped for Attack of the Clones after Phantom Menace & then spiked for the final chapter.

As for clapping a film that's the preserve of fanboy goons.

It's happened to me at the end of all three Lord of the Rings films, and then also during(cheering the bride on and applauding at the victories), and at the end of both Kill Bill parts.
