People that applaud at the end of a film in the cinema

I've had this experience now 4 times when i went to see the following films.
"Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith"
"Charlie & The Chocolate Factory" (Tim Burtons Version)
"Gran Torino"
"Wolverine"

I can understand someone enjoying a film but the applauding bit i just find slightly odd.

So has anyone experienced this or has anyone here applauded after watching a film in the cinema?.

Yeah the audience applauded when i saw this too, it was on the day it was released. I dont see the problem with clapping really, it shows you enjoyed the film, people clap after every song at a concert, at the theatre and other live events so why not the cinema too if you really enjoyed it? I guess the difference is that the people who made it arent there so clapping i suppose does seem a bit pointless. Oh and i think ive seen it happen at LOTR movies too, other than that i cant really remember.

But like you say they are live events. The actors or singers are actually there. So it would be only right to applaud in those situations.

I've never had anyone applaud a film in a cinema. Some geeky fanboy idiot tried to get a round of applause going after Spider Man 3 but everyone just rushed for the exit, lol.

On school trips to the cinema everybody used to clap when the film finished and when I watched Twilight and HP people clapped, I woudn't normally clap for twatlight but I didn't want to look like an idiot!

Not since I went to an advance screening of The Matrix. Would never do this myself though unless I was sat next to the director!

I like it when audiences applaud at the end of the film. Yeah, the people aren't actually there but it's still a congratulations of the efforts put in, a nice gesture, a sign of sucess. And when it's a film directed by/starring somebody I admire, it makes me pleased to hear people clap.

I think clapping at the end of a film is a bit odd. Who or what are they clapping for?

Well, I mean I know who they're clapping for - the people in the film, people who made the film etc. But they won't be benefitting from knowing some people in a cinema somewhere did a round of applause after their movie, will they?

It makes no sense to me, but I suppose the people who do it must have their reasons.:)

When I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean 3 I was surprised when people clapped at the end, because I'd never seen people clap at the end of a film before.

Overcome with emotions when realising they made it without the plane crashing?

But yes, odd. I've been on a few planes where people clap once landed.
