People, Linking, Exchange, Gmail. Help?

Hi all, trying to figure some things out on my new phone here. I have the Verizon HTC Incredible. The contact manager on my phone is simply called "People". I have successfully managed to get all my contacts moved over and looking pretty good - had to "link" several people so they would stop showing multiples.

I'm set up to sync with Exchange and Gmail. When I edit a contact, it prompts me to choose whether to edit the OUTLOOK version or the GMAIL version. What the hell is going on here? I assume if I link two contacts together, I now have ONE contact entry and it will sync that entry to any of my linked accounts. Is this not the case?

Also, when I enter a contact in from the phone, it defaults to "Phone" as the type. This does not get sync'd to anything, apparently?

I'm just a little confused as to how this whole thing is organized. Is my error trying to sync between Outlook and Gmail at the same time? Do I need to select one and just use it?

Thanks you in advance for any help.

I am facing similar issues. If I edit contacts on my phone, they don't sync to my gmail contacts. However if I edit contacts on Google contacts, they do flow downstream.

I am using Motorola Droid.

The problem here is not understanding how Sense UI works. Sense UI uses the People app instead of the Contacts app. This is a common problem for new users, or users who are used to the standard Android Contacts app.

I can't speak for Sense UI on the Incredible, but the important part is to select the account type of Google if you want the contact to sync to your Google contacts, and Exchange if you want it to sync to your Exchange contacts, as opposed to phone or SIM. Part 3 is the important step. Copy and pasting from my HTC Desire manual (which also runs Sense), it says:

Adding a new contact

1. Press HOME, and then tap > People.

2. On the All tab, tap Add contact at the top of the screen.

3. Select the Contact account, for example Google or Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. This determines which account the contact will sync with. For more information, see "Ways of getting contacts into your phone" in this chapter.

4. Do one of the following:
For Google, Exchange or Phone contact type, tap the Name field, enter the first and last name of the contact, and choose the order in which to display the names. Tap OK.
For SIM contact type, tap the Name field, and then enter the name.

5. Enter the contact information in the fields provided.

6. Scroll to the bottom of the screen, and then tap Save.

Thank you very much for the response.

I guess I understand how it works, I was just hoping that the phone had the ability to synchronize between multiple accounts without having to maintain separate entries. It's also annoying that it will allow you to create a 'Phone' entry that, like Abee said, will not sync with anything. I am either going to have to get a 3rd party app to sync Outlook with Google, or just dump all my contacts out of one of them and only use one of them for my master list.

It's a great operating system overall, and I realize it's designed for maximum flexibility - just sometimes I wish it knew exactly what I wanted and could do that.

Well this isn't an Android issue at all, it's actually a Sense UI issue. I don't know how Android 2.0/2.1 handles Exchange though, Sense is meant to be better at it.

So if you create a phone contact, can you not edit it later and set the account type to Google (or Exchange)?

Extorian and others

I'm having the same issue with the Droid X - when I create a new contact through Contacts app, it gives me no option to choose Exchange or Gmail (I currently only have Exchange syncing and not gmail). After creating a new contact, it does not show up in my Enterprise outlook. Downstream works fine

I don't see a People app and assuming Droid x uses the contacts app

Thank you!
