Pelvic Ultrasound Exam

Hi there,
I have one of these booked (abdominal version) to investigate why I'm not having periods (so female organs) as I declined a vaginal scan (not keen on getting up close and personal!)
Can anyone tell me what it's like, it says on the letter I'll change into a gown, why? I thought it was just the belly area? Why would I need to change into a gown? or is this just standard letter and I won't actually have to?
I know what ultrasound is etc. and how its done, just not how this particular one is done, whereabouts are they doing it? Anyone had one?
Thanks! (and yes I shouldn't be worrying about a simple procedure thats not harmful it's the embaressment factor :O)

Ultrasounds require that they put gel on you as a rule so I assume that's why you need the gown. I had an abdominal one for my gallbladder and they did that. You know, like when you're pregnant?

I have had a pelvic ultrasound and it's no big deal. They insert a 'penis-sized' wand into your vagina and they can see your uterus, ovaries, cervix, etc. Ask to see the screen while they do it--it's really cool! It doesn't hurt a bit and it's very interesting to watch. That's how they diagnosed my fibroids. Truly, it's not anything to worry about.

Loppy, for the technician there is nothing up close and personal at all . . . it is strictly medical. You do not have anything they have not seen hundreds of times. If you have a preference about the gender of the technician, that might be arranged.

As mentioned already, the gown is a precaution so gel does not get on your clothes.

Everyone gets embarrassed about this stuff. The cure for that is just biting the bullet and going through with it, and get yourself de-sensitized to it, and think about the possible consequences of NOT having these procedures.

Good luck!

p.s. Oh, yeah, I've had one, too, and it is not big deal . . . probably less embarrassing than the annual internal exam somehow.

Hi Loppy

think the gown is just to protect your clothes. wear seperates so you only have to half undress. If they are going to do ultra sound on your tummy they just tuck a paper towel over the top of your pants If you were to take up the internal scan you are covered with blankets for privacy you can ask for a female technition

Hope this helps I guess you are young
