pellet guns in california illegal?

i live in los angeles california and i jus purchased a pallet gun (1000+ fps) pretty powerful gun. i was wondering if it would b illegal to shoot this in my backyard. i mean i dont want swat or Lapd on my ass for shooting it. so the question is, is it illegal to shoot it in my backyard and if it is, what happens when i get caught?
