Pc hardware problem or something else?

I start up my windows xp computer...within a few minutes it just shutdowns on its own, with no messages or warning or errors or anything. and when I try to start it again it wont turn on. I have to turn off the main switch and wait for a couple of minutes, so that it'll start again. but then the same thing happens again and again.
P.S. i scanned the whole computer, and its totally virus free! So dont even try telling me there's a virus.
 
virus scanning really doesn't do much... turn it on and try to backup your files if they're are any important ones. then reformat. if that doesn't work, it's probably a hardware problem.
