Parents, should there be scoring in youth sports or not?

This is a tough one. Usually there is no scoring because they their goal is to teach the kids good sportsmanship. You know the saying, "it is not whether you win or lose, it is how you play the game." This is basically what they are trying to teach them.

However, you can be assured that the coaches are keeping score. They do this so they can give the team pep talks after the games. It helps the kids moral if they know they have won. Keeping score can also be used as a way to help kids see what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong. If they are losing all the time then they obviously need to practice more.

Some teams can be pretty bad when they start playing so not keeping score saves them the embarrassment of losing all the time.

As much fun as it is for everyone to "win" and get a trophy or prize just for playing it is not right. There are losers in sports and kids need to be taught that. That is true sportsmanship. You should not get rewarded just for showing up. When they grow up and enter the working world they cannot expect to be treated like a winner all the time.
