Parents, at what age are you going to give your child a cell phone?

I was actually not going to allow my son or others I may have to have a cell phone until they were able to purchase one on their own...but then I realized having one may be safer then not. I'm not sure what age is appropriate to give them one though. I have seen 6 year olds with cell phones, and it just doesn't seem right to me.
What age do you think is appropriate? Or do you share my original view...and think it is something they should have to buy on their own?
