My mother is in her 70's nd was told that her stomach is paralyzed and that there is nothing that can be done for her, everytime she eats, even jsut a peanut, within a few mins she regurgitates, however, according to the dr's her stomach is not totally empty. My question is this: has anyone ever heard of this and is there really nothing that can be done for her? She is too emabarrased to go out to eat anymore bacause of this. Does anyone have any ideas?

what your mother has is called gastroparesis, if the doctor is right in his/her diagnosis. there are different reasons that cause it, one is diabetes. it's usually because of a nerve involvement.
there are treatments and a new doctor is necessary if this one won't help. she may have to have a liquid diet such as Boost drink til her condition can be helped.

Flan is absolutely right. My mother-in-law has this and she's also had diabetes for 35 years. In her case, it was mainly the esophagus and they gave her botox injections in the esophageal smooth muscle, then stretched the esophagus. She is 84 and unfortunately now she must be on a semi-liquid diet--nothing thicker than yogurt. However, there are other options for a person in better health and younger. Find a good gastro doctor and have her evaluated thoroughly. My heart goes out to both you and your mother--a very difficult situation!

Thank you both for you help, I will have to tell her about this. Her doctor had sent her to Shands in Fl, but, they all said that there was not anything they could do forher. I am going to see if I can get her to go see a gastro specialist. Keep your fingers crossed and again thanks.
