PalmOne T5 and Kudos and Gripes

I really like my new T5 with lots of extra memory and extra fast processor. I like to play with GPS navigation and the map files are very large. I also lie the builtin bluetooth, as I was able to get a GPS that also does bluetooth. No more wires!

My gripes are:

1) The connectors for PalmOne devices are not the same. The connectors for my wife's Tungsten E are not compatible with those for my T5. The T5 even appears to be incompatible with the T3.

2) PalmOne makes you pay extra for a charging/hotsync cradle (which apparently is not available yet.) My first three PDA's, a Palm IIIXe and two Sony Clie's, all included a charging cradle.

3) The PalmOne charging adaptor is USA (115v) only. My first three PDA's had a universal-voltage charger.

4) PalmOne did not introduce the hard case at the same time as the T5. I had to buy the case separately and mail in for a rebate. Yet when I bought my wife's T-E, the case was in the box.

It seems to me that to insure customer loyalty, PalmOne should standardize on one connector and promise to use that connector for all future models. Otherwise there will be no incentive for users to stick with the same brand for future purchases.

With regards to the connector issue.....this has been bantered around and the T5 is using a new connector that is supposedly going to be a standard for some time but don't bet on it. None of the early Palm's had universal connectors and they did use one intro'd on the M500 series and was good till through the T3.

The TE went to a USB style connector and BTW it does not come with a cradle either. PalmOne apparently did some research (bogus) and decided that most user's will start using some other wireless form of connectivitiy either BT or WiFi (which is only on the C) rather than a cradle. Bottom line it's a dollar's and sense thing with the dollars staying in Palm's pocket.

Regarding the case issue - on going problem with being an Early Adopter. The accessory people don't know how many are going to sell so they don't ramp up and often they don't get a prototype to model their design until after launch of the device.

Now back to the connector issue - Pocket PC has done the exact same thing - they are all different and usually not interchangeable.

It's just the way it is.....and up until the T5 P1 had been getting usually good press. The lack of a metal casing, vibrating alarm and Wifi plus now the Memory Allocation issues the T5 and thus P! are getting bad press.

The more compact synch & charge cable was included, though. I'm wondering why you would want or need a cradle? Bummer about the case--mine was in the box. Have you done your software upgrade yet? I think the knowlege so many nice people on this message board have and are willing to share has had a lot to do with the fact that I'm having a smooth and easy time getting up to speed with my T5. Glad to hear you are enjoying yours.
