Palm TX wont switch on

Hi guys,

My Palm TX had a problem where the only way to turn it on was with a soft reset. The problem would go away for about a half a day after the reset but would always return.

I just tried a hard-reset, and now it wont switch on at all :-(

Has anyone had this problem? I think I'll probably have to return it, which is a shame because it's amazing when it works.

Any advise would be very much appreciated.

I have the same problem, together with the problem a soft reset when running the Web browser. I uninstalled Text PLus and erased the Mobi Reader files from the TX memory (I still have Mobi Reader installed on my card). This fixed the Web Browser resets and seemed to fix the TX not turning on problem, at least for 4 day. Unfortunately, the problem appeared again on my TX yesterday.

I've noticed that when I remove my TX from the cradle, I have to wait a couple of seconds for it to recognize I've depressed the on switch. Have other users experienced this problem also? It would help me determine if I have a hardware or a software related problem.
 
If they won't come on - that's a hardware failure period. It's not a software conflict. Software conflicts usually reveal themselves as a "freeze" and won't turn off without accessing a soft reset.

Now in rangi50's case - are you sure that it's fully charged? A device that is on the brink of being totally out of juice will react similarly. If when it's connected to the charger it shows as charging then just be certain.

Ulises - it's normal for a slight delay to occur coming off of the cradle before it'll launch on most Palms. This is to prevent damage caused by static electricity issues that were raised during the old Serial cable days on V's and Vx's and M500 series. Palm was sued over those issues and built in a slight delay when disconnecting from a charger.

Slight delay - 2 seconds max. If it's taking 10 or 15 seconds then I'd say you have a different hardware problem.

For both of you - as a test and this is what Palm tech support will tell you before authorizing a return - hard reset the device and clear the backup so that only the native Palm applications and it's corresponding data is on it. If the conditions continue under those circumstances - the unit's bad. If not then start adding software back to the device one program at a time over several days to see which software or combination of software may be causing the problem.

Thanks for your feedback. The delay is indeed within the 2 second timeframe.

As for the hard reset procedure. I did that exactly that, only that I added some "must have applications" like DateBk5, ToDo Plus, and NeoCalc. I guess I'll have to follow your advice and spend some days without the benefits of these applications. What bothers me is the unpredictability of the sympthom. After 4 days, I thought I had found the culprit. The fact that the frequency of the error decreased to zero during the four days was what made me "conclude" that is was a software problem and not a hardware problem.

I'll lay odds that ToDo Plus is the culprit. It has not been updated since 2003....it's not designed to work with the newer NVFS file system on the TX nor LD or 650.

It will be the culprit.

Also you might want to try Crash Pro . It's usually pretty good about telling you what's the problem. I have a registerd copy that is on the SD card and gets moved into RAM when necessary after I'm experiencing resets and I want to pin it down.
 
Just got back from replacing my TX at CompUSA. Did a hard reset on my original TX and the problem with the on-off botton continued, without any 3rd party software.

Given Rangi's similar experience, it would be interesting to see if these were lemons or if they have a problem with their on-off switch supplier.
 
I've just replaced mine also, for the same problem. Although I will admit that I had several third party apps installed. I'm going to try the new obne without adding any new applications and see what kind of success I have. With all of the messages that I am seeing at various forums, me thinks Palm has a problem.
 
I've just sent my back to Palm for a replacement. They were quite helpful actually, said it should be back with me in about a week (although it's Christmas so I won't be surprised if it's a bit longer). Will let you know how I get on...

After owning a Psion 5mx for 5 years I've just swapped over to a T5 & I've had the same problem - & I've only had it 4 days!! :mad:

Not a very good start to the world of Palm :(
 
Well I'm working on my second TX, after exchanging the first one. After two weeks, I've only had the problem once. I've been very careful about which third party apps I have added, only using those that the vendor indicates as being compatible with the TX. This is really weird.
 
Palm TX (14 months since purchase) -- turned it off after use -- showed 50% on battery. Tried to turn it on a few hours later -- nothing. Plugged it in -- nothing. Plugged it in overnight -- nothing. I haven't tried to reset. If at all possible, I'd like to keep my data. Anyone with any ideas?
 
How are you turning it on? Do you mean with the main power button only or do you mean by using any of the 4 hard buttons or the center button of the 5-way?

The reason I ask is that the power button/switch combination of the TX is problematic but it is also easily fixable. If none of the hard buttons turns the device on then I have no solution. On the other hand, if it is only the power button that won't turn it on then it is likely fixable for no cost, just a bit of time and effort to take the back off the TX, wick a drop of WD-40 into the switch, clean any lint around the button area and reassemble.
