Palm TX sync cord

I am having trouble synching my TX with my Win XP pc.

It maybe the that sync cord is damaged as Hotsync does not work.

When I look at the connector only some of the gold pins appear to be present.

With the login button uppermost only 4 pins are visible on the left of the bank of pins. Then 3 blank pin holes then 1 pin then 5 blank pin holes.

The Palm docking port has pins in all slots. I can use a bluetooth device to backup my TX to my laptop so think that the Palm itslf is ok.

Any advice please.

I don't know how long you've had your TX for, and if you've ever had problems with the hotsync in the past, but I can tell you that I just recently (about 1 month ago) bought a brand new TX, and had problems with the hotsync cable.

The 1st unit I got was able to hotsync to my winXP PC, but only like 10% of the time. It would often go on and offline once I plugged it in (you know the sound XP make when a USB device is connected or disconnected- well, it would do that CONSTANTLY!). I found that (by borrowing a friends hotsync cable and by trying to hotsync to a different PC) - the problem appeared to be the palm itself, and not the cable.

Needless to say, I returned that unit, and got a replacement TX, and it seemed to be a bit more reliable, but I still found that I needed to press down the hotsync connector (at the TX) slightly sometimes to get it to work. I finally gave up trying to sync with the cable, and now I just hotsync via Wi-Fi.

FYI, the Palm end of the hotsync cable should have five pins total, one of them will protrude a bit farther than the others (this is usually the ground pin, and the purpose of it being longer is that so it is the first pin to make a connection to the connector).

good luck!

I have tried again and a bit of wiggling got a backup.

I think I will use my Wi fi setup in future.

Do you know of a set of instructions on how to backup by wifi?

Wi-Fi hotsyncing is pretty easy to set up. You have to have the exact name of your computer first, though. In Win XP, go to My Computer > Control Panel and click on the "Computer Name" tab and find where it says "Full computer name:" (and write it down!)

Also on your PC, in the system tray (at the lower right corner of the screen by the date & time), you need to right-click the hotsync icon; you should already have the 'Local USB' item checked. You also need to check the 'Network' option as well (you don't need to uncheck the 'Local USB' option, just leave that checked too). This should obviously all be done when you are logged in to XP as yourself (or whoever has the hotsync application running).

Now, on you Palm, go to the hotsync screen, and click the Network tab. If you click the dropdown list under the big hotsync button, it should allow you to add a PC. It will probably then try to connect to your home network and find a PC. Mine never did find a PC (and still won't!!?!?), and I had to set mine up manually, but that's ok because you now know your computer's name (from the 1st step). If it tells you that no PC's were found on your LAN, just click the 'Other' button, and then enter you PC name exactly as it appeared in the control panel 'computer name' dialog box in XP.

After that, with any luck, you should be able to go to Hotsync on your palm, and choose the Network option, and then hit the big hotsync button in the middle of the screen to start a hotsync. (and make sure that you computer name is still shown in the little drop down box right below it!)

I had a problem getting it to work the 1st time I tried it, and found that if I did a regular USB (cable) hotsync, and then immediately did a network hotsync over Wi-Fi, then it worked. Go figure..... I do believe that you need to be logged in to your Win XP account, and have the hotsync app. running on your PC to be able to do a hotsync.

good luck!

Thank you for the instructions but I have a problem.

When I tap Network, on my Plam TX, I do not get the option to add a PC even though the help says I should?

The options I get are:-

PalmModem
Infrared to GSM Phone
Serial to GSM Phone
BT to generic GSM
IR to generic GSM
Serial to generic GSM
Edit Connections...

Any advice please?

Athegn,
Are you tapping Network on the Prefs page or the Hotsync screen? It's got to be the Hotsync screen above the sync button, where it says "Local/Network" - you tap Network to highlight it.

Once you've done that, pull down the Options menu on the Hotsync screen and select Network Setup, one of the choices there should be WiFi - choose that and tap Done.

Now you tap the drop-down list immediately underneath the big Hotsync button in the midddle of the screen, which should get you to the "Select a PC" option. It will go off and scan for PCs which are running the Hotsync service, and from here you follow Jer1's suggestions above.

Yes am using the Hotsync screen and have highlighted "Network"

Yes and Wifi now connected; Blazer reads web pages

I do noty get:-

"Select a PC" option

Any advice please?

Athegn,
I just checked on my TX, and what you describe is what I get in the drop-down list under the Hotsync button if Local is selected. If Network is selected, I get a list of PCs with "Select PC" at the bottom.

Thank you for all those who helped so far

Select Local i.e "Local" is highlighted Blue?

I get:-

Cradle/Cable
IR to a PC/Handheld
MY LAPTOP
Edit Connections...

When Network highlighted i.e blue I get the items in my previous post.

No mention in either list of "Select PC"

UNTIL...

I used LANSync Prefs... and pressed the two options there. Now I have the above for Local but only "-Tap to Select PC-"; NOTE "-Tap to ...... ..-" slightly different from "Select PC"; as the only option under the Large Hotsync button.

I have now been able to do a Wifi Hotsync.

However I would like to know why I have a different message to others and different options under Local?

Maybe it's "Select PC" once you've already set one up, and "Tap to.." before then?

Hmm, your mention of having to adjust something in LANsync Prefs rings a dim and distant bell.... Now that you remind me, I seem to recall also having issues with Wi-Fi Hotsync when I got my first TX a couple of years ago, issues that needed a bit of tweeking somewhere in the option settings.... I'm sorry I didn't remember sooner! (-:
