Palm Treo 700w vs. 700p for Verizon

I have had a cell phone for around a year now and I have seen my internet, email, and IM usage go up quite a bit. My little Moto e815's keypad is doing me good for speed typing, plus the idea of the internet using up minutes is kind of hurting my usage.

I've decided to step up to a smartphone because of this. I am also 15 and am close to getting a blogging job online that will help me pay for the data service that Verizon Wireless charges. I was looking at the XV6700, but it was too much PDA and I need some phone in it.

I have settled on the Treo lineup. I've been looking at the 700w and the 700p on eBay. I would love to have the 700wx, but the prices for them on eBay are way high for my budget ($250-300 and under).

I will use it for email, IM, internet, possibly streaming content (radio, video, etc.), and PDA functions. Once I get my driver's licence, I will also most likely use it for downloading files to computers because I plan to start my own on-site computer repair business.

So, which do you think would be the reasonable one based on the circumstances and the fact that they are the same price on eBay?

Thanks very much.

I can't really help you with Palm vs Windows Mobile, but there are huge amounts of information out there about it and you will just have to decide for yourself which one you think you would like best. I have heard that many people were dissatisfied with the small amount of memory available on the 700w and that the wx was much better. The phone price is going to end up being small compared to how much you spend on service so I'd say if you decide to go the Windows Mobile route go ahead and spend the extra bucks on the wx, in the long run you will not miss the extra $100 or whatever the difference is.

Hey. That's really cool man. I'm about your age and I use a Samsung i730 which is really great. The 700w really crashes way too much. It only has 32 MB RAM which works fine on the Palm OS 700p (identical hardware) but on a windows PDA it doesn't work too well. The i730 has a 520 mHz processor and 64 MB RAM. Just remember, on Windows PDAs you have to go into memory settings and manually shut down porgrams, not just close the window.

I think you should get the i730 or 6700 (the i730 doesn't have a camera if that matters to you) because the Treos are not as good quality, especially the 700w. If you really have your heart set on the Treos, then get the 700p. Palm OS isn't as powerful as Windows but it's easier to use, cleaner, and snappier.

PS the i730 is only $100!

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention the phone part on the i730. The sound quality is good. The volume is a little low but it works. I use a Bluetooth headset anyway. But reception is amaizing. There is a resivour (sp?) area and every single phone that goes there gets No Service consistantly. However, with my i730, I occasionally get No Service but most of the time it's 0-2 bars.

I guess I won't be getting the Treos. I've been looking at the XV6700, but not really the i730 because it's a little big, but then again so is the XV6700. What do you think about the Motorola Q?

The i730 really isn't that big. The shape actually makes it feels smaller than the Treos. The Q isn't nearly as powerful as a full PDA but it does Internet and e-mail.

a note about the Q: it eats up battery like nobody's business...i'd reccomend the i730 or one of the treos...

ps: don't expect much street cred with a palm treo...

OK i just noticed on the mobiledia web site, there's a new blackberry listed. It's white, 64mb memory, prolly blackberry os, but it has a neat trackball (like on the sidekick 3) in the center of a directional keypad for navigation. it's white, see more here:

also: it's not coming out until Q2, so if you want a phone now, it's not a possibility.

Now I'm facing a major dilemma. I am still having problems deciding which one. I'd love the Treo, but I'd also love the Motorola Q. I like the amount of power of the Treo, but I've heard it being plagued with problems. I'd like the Samsung i730, but it's an older PDA and is being phased out. I'd like the Q because it's small, but the battery life sucks.

I thought about the BlackBerry, but I'd like the possibility of having a camera built-in. I have no clue which direction I'm heading in.
