Palm Pre Preware and Homebrew apps?

i bought a palm pre and i am reading stuff about downloading preware aned homebrew apps and stuff, i want to know what are these things and will they make the phone slower by downloading to many apps?? Also are they legit to where your phone won't get a virus or something? THanks
