I'm a new oil painting hobbyist. I've finished maybe 20 paintings so far. I'm happy with my pine trees (at least the spruce types) but my deciduous trees have kinda blobby looking leaves. I use a #4 flat, or thereabouts, when painting say a 18 x 20 canvas, and make the leaves with that, on a tree where I already painting in a trunk and a bunch of branches. I don't only use the flat of the brush, I do use the corners too. My trunks and branches come out very nicely, it is just the leaves I am unhappy with, for both trees in the foreground & in the background. My background trees look like a bunch of blobby hummocks, imo. Don't like them either. I do keep in mind the various species of trees I am painting too & try to adjust the leaves for that too, to limited success.

Thanks! It would be fun to try out some other people's methods & see what I like!
