is it difficult to do? what type of paints are needed? in you opinion whats a calming colour? how many coats?
My rooms a light pinky white cream colour and is suited towards brown wood. However the furniture I have was added later and is white. The wardrobes a grainy blue colour and modern (ikea). Im 16, could I paint it myself or do I need to get outside help? I'm looking for a colour that matches the furniture and isnt plain white or pink. I want it to be calm but happy.. HELP. advice would be good :)
thanks. sorry for such a disjointed question !
this may sound like a stupid question. but will pastel colours work over my pinkish wall.. or do you have to paint it white first?
And I wont be painting it alone, my mum will help, but she doesnt have much experience either.. but it will mean more hands. thanks heaps for the advice so far. its great !

Ok first of all... yes you can do it. I'd do a little research on the net (site below) if I were you on techniques etc but you can always ask an adult family member or friend for tips too. Most pastel colours are calming and not too harsh on your eye.

You need to sand the walls, wipe them down to get rid of any dust from sanding, then cut in (paint along the edges where a roller wont reach) then roll everything in between.

It does take a lot of work, I recently just painted my unit and it takes alot of time. See if you have a friend who can help, many hands make light work.

Good luck and I hope you're new room is everything you wanted.

First of all, painting a room is not hugely difficult but if you've never done it before I definitely suggest having someone help you that has some experience. As far as choosing a color, be sure you pick something that is not too bright as most paint dries darker and more intense than the swatch. Pick up some swatches you like from your local hardware store and see how they look next to your furniture. I suggest going for a more pastel shade of whatever color you chose. For an average size room you would need a gallon to a gallon and a half of paint, maybe two gallons if you're inexperienced and may leave streaks that will need to be covered with additional coats. Most colors take two coats to cover if the paint you're covering in light.Make sure you ask for interior flat paint. Aside from your paint, you will need:
-Plastic drop cloths to cover the floor and furniture.
-1 roller handle for each person painting.
-1 or two roller covers in a pile that goes with your wall texture.
-1 or 2 1" brushes for painting around lightswitches and things
-I strongly suggest an edger for the trim, it cuts the work in half and brush trim can be very hard if you've never done it before.
-Painters tape for masking the baseboards.
-Rags on hand for spills.
-A paint tray that matches the size of your roller, with either a disposable liner or a plastic shopping bag turned inside out (saves alot of cleanup time.)

Some tips from experience:
When working with colors, roll in a criss-cross pattern to minimize streaking. Once you've started a wall, don't stop midway or you'll have streaks. If you can't reach to the top of the wall, you're better off getting up on a stool to do the top bit than using an extended pole; its damn near impossible to maintain even pressure with those. Wear clothes you don't mind getting messy, there will always be splatters and smears.

That's all I can think of for now, good luck~!
-I just saw the person above me said you need to sand the walls- that's nonsense unless you're trying to remove a faux-finish, which you're not. Flat paint covers flat paint just fine. You sand furniture, not bloody walls.
