Paint problems - White 848/1198

Okay,

I've got a friend who's having this problem right now and from what I've heard it's pretty widespread and DNA knows about it.

Ducati is having serious problems matching nose and body paint. As you can see from vqtt's post, they just don't match. Okay, it may be slight and it may not bother people but my friend showed up and refused to take possession of the bike from the dealer until they fixed it. From what I've heard it's affecting a lot of the 1198's as well.

Sorry vq, but I used your photos as an example.

That happen to my yellow. Talk to DNA without result.... wanna purchase a new head fairing, but dealership says no return if color still not match.....I was pissed off but still... I end up buying the tri-color set fairing and tank. good thing is your friend refuse to take delivery. I found out the problem 2 months after delivery. I am sure the dealer will replace for him before delivery.

I had this problem with the solo cowl. It was very noticeably off. The day I got it and installed it in the parking lot of the dealership, I had my sales guy come look at it. He immediately noticed the difference. The only way the cowl matched up with the rear tail is if you looked at it directly from on top.

probably different batches, the only answer is to paint the entire bike with the same mix at the same time

Does the 848 come with the white belly pan now and a red ducati on the tank?

It's always a problem getting colors to match. The reds and yellows seem to be the hardest to get right. The pearl white is also very difficult to achieve the same depth and hue.
A buddy had a 748 and one day in the sun we noticed four different shades of the same color. On most bikes, tanks are made somewhere, fairings somewhere else and tail sections also elsewhere. With three or more vendors involved I'm amazed they turn out as well as they do!

On a car it's often different. Build the body with doors and hood/trunk, and paint it. Some cars also hang the other parts such as the bumper covers and misc small parts on the same paint line so it all gets squirted at the same time.

Today color matching for repairs is an extreme art. You'll never get the same balance as that provided by the factory. Also factor in that many of the aftermarket paints likely have differing enviro laws and have to be formulated differently with obvious different results.

My tank and fairings are slightly different shades, but the seat cowl and tail are mint. I was more disappointed with the poor paint coverage around the air intakes on the upper and tail.
