Hi so I have been on this site for a few years with many spine problems and recently diagnosed with diverticulosis otherwise I am a healthy 28 year old female who is overweight at 5ft 10 size 215lbs I am also a smoker (quit for awhile but you all know how that goes).

Ok so a year ago I found a few lumps on my ribs on right side they hurt and felt like little lima beans as well as a few in my chest, and a lump under right breast. Showed doc ones on ribs and one in my chest, I told him they hurt and he pushed on them harder and laughed and said "no they don't they are lipomas". I began to cry because they do hurt alot. So I havent been back since this happened. Over the past year I have developed many more lumps a huge one in my right elbow joint that really isnt painful just size of golf ball, I have one on right elbow and left knee as well. He refused to feel the one under my breast since he was male and sure they were lipomas and now that is bigger. I have small one in my armpit and one in groin again doesnt hurt just lima bean sized. Ok here is the big problem two days ago my face began to hurt beyond hurt!!! it is swollen along my jaw my ear is killing me there are small lumps along my jaw line and one under my chin......I had a z pack anitbiotic leftover so I began taking that at home today incase it is a tooth abcess or something and I am on vicodin for my spine stuff and I have been eating those like candy. Heat and Ice as well.....

.I am reluctant to see this man again unless I absolutely have no choice because he treats me like I am a freaking nut case!!! (I was a social worker for 9 years before the spine disorder and count diagnose myself LOL). Please I don't belive these are all lipomas because so many of them hurt and they have grown and multiplied so fast!!! Last blood work a year ago said I had elevated wbc and wbc in my urine. Has anyone else ever had lumps like this??? my knee one hurts as well as the ones in my ribs and stomach and now my face is swollen like a blow fish!!! I hope they are just nothing but I fear this has to be something. I am tired all the time as well. Thank you for taking time out of your life to read this and anyone who has any idea I thank you from the bottom of my heart......ps I have been actively searching for a new doc and pray to find a good one.....best wishes and good health to you all -Jen

Hi

I am sorry you has such a bad experience with a doctor. Well, you know what? There are other doctors and I think you should see one. They might only be lipomas in the end, but while lipomas are usually painless, this is not always the case, particulary if they are pressing on something.

I would head to a dermatologist or surgeon, explain how these lumps ARE giving you pain and that you want a biopsy done on them to rule out anything more serious. You are entitled to have any fears put to rest and you are entitled to say something hurts when it does!

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I have a lot of lipomas- I have had 2 removed because they are so painful. They say usually they are not, but in my case they are. I have another one on my arm that I want to get removed because it is getting so large and ugly. I would definitely go to a surgeon to have one removed and biopsied. It is a very easy procedure.

Unless a Dr does a CT scan or Ultrasound, I don't think they can really know for sure if the lympn node is swollen. Lipomas and lymph nodes can be differentiated on these scans (well, at least an U/S for sure since I just had one).

Sometimes going to a new Dr to get a new perspective helps. There is a disease called Decrum's that makes people get many painful lipomas. I don't think it is very common, but check that out.

Thanks for responding guys.... I really hope these are just lipomas but online they said they are slow growing and non painful which doesn't fit the description of these....but hope that is all.....three days into antibiotic and some of the swelling in my face is down but still feel little lumps on jaw line, in neck and still in crazy pain! Heat helps very little but we'll see in about two more days when finished. If still there I am prob going to half to see a doc again. I kinda was just hoping for a direction on which to lead my doc ( because he really is an idiot and treats me terribly, calls me names etc..just docs here are very limited to people with state care, I have been begging someone else to see me for months and am on two waiting lists). I don't want to just find every disorder online that is close and bring it up because then he will think I am a nut case lol kinda hoping someone out there has had the same if not very similar problems with an DX so I could have more of a case for bringing up the idea of why I think they could poss not be lipomas. I have looked into dercums and it is kinda rare so I didn't want to bring it up. I am young so most docs blow me off without testing ....but that is what they told me about my spine until 6 months later when I had an MRI and they went "oops" I was 25 and had the spine of an 80 year old essentially ( i could give all the tech terms but that is the jist). I havent had very good luck sticking to the norms of my age group thus far LOL. Who knows maybe I'll find the answers eventually? best luck to you all and thanks again for taking time out of lives to assist me -Jen

Your doctor's response is unconscionable. He doesn't KNOW what they are if he doesn't examine, and just because one was a lipoma doesn't mean another isn't cancer. I'm not saying you have cancer, I'm just saying he should be checking you and taking you seriously. You're not THAT overweight. I am 5'5" and 225 and I notice that since I gained weight (I used to be thin) people marginalize me. Doctors don't always take me seriously, people look "through" me at grocery stores. Don't take that from a doctor- you pay him, he works for you. If your doctor won't take you seriously because you are overweight find another doctor. His response is putting you at risk to have an undiagnosed illness, and that is just wrong.
