4 years ago back was injured. Have an L5 S1 disk herneated on the left side, causing pain and nurabness in back and left leg. Woke up on Wed. with extreme sciatic pain going down right leg. No new injury, so I have no clue why it is hurting on right side (left leg still nurab). In the process of scheduling new MRI. Has anyone had this happen to them? Any ideas as to what is going on with me?

Thanks

Welcome to the board. As I'm sure you know, none of us are trained medical professionals, so our comments at best will be an educated guess.

Chances are fairly good that the disc herniation has gotten larger and is now encroaching on the opposing spinal nerve root. Or, the disc has ruptured and the other nerve root is now affected too. Or, it could be an adjoining disc has developed a bulge and it is affecting the spinal nerve root at that level. There are other reasons, too but a disc problem would be my first guess.

As you suggested, new imaging will hopefully reveal the problem.

Please come back and tell us what they find, and how you are doing. We have a nice, supportive community of fellow spineys here.

TT.

I would agree fully with what Taton posted. You should probably see a doctor again and get new imaging done.
