Three months ago I had a cervical laminectomy, NOW I have problems with my lower back (actually I always have, but now it's really bad). My lower back and right hip hurt soooo much that I cant' sit at the computer, or any place else for more that 10 min. The pain also shoots down my right leg at times. I had an x-ray that showed "minor" narrowing of the L1-L2 discs. Well if it's minor why am I in so much pain? Does an x-ray give an accurate diegnosis or should I get an MRI. I was trying PT but it hurt too much, should I try to stay with it? Does it really help?
Everyone on the spine and nerve boarRAB were so helpful, So I'm hoping this board will be too.
Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi

Sorry to hear you are having problems.

I have always been told that if any exercises hurt don't do them!

I am also thinking that an MRI would give you a more in depth diagnosis if you have a problem.

Best wishes

Hi elle!

Your situation sounRAB a bit like me. I had a cervical fusion done about 4 years back and had previously "thrown out" my back several times previously (since i was 21...33 now).

I started having pain in my hip, then my knee, then finally my foot. You need to have an mri done. Hip pain is normally associated with L4-5 and L5-S1. I actually had bad disks in both places, discovered through MRI, but my L5-S1 was particularly bad. I then had a mylegram, which is a CT scan following injection of dye directly into your spinal column (and yes, it's just as painful as it sounRAB,) to be certain that was the issue. As a result, I had a laminectomy at l5-s1 about 3 weeks ago. The result of that has yet to be ascertained as my nerve is still "angry" (as my doc likes to say) and my pain is actually worse than before. However, I am hopeful that the nerve will settle and things will improve.

I recommend you find yourself a spine specialist...if that is who ordered an x-ray, find yourself a different one. In my experience, an x-ray simply does not provide enough detail of the disks.

Good luck to you Elle, and please keep us posted. Don't give up hope, you only need to stay on top of it and keep communicating with your doctors.
