Owner

Anyone know how to get a shortcut on the Palm Tx for "Owner", the one in the Prefs. I have always had one before, but cant find it on the new Tx. Any thoughts.

What??? Are you guys gonna let me down, or did I stump the band???I?ll bet a bunch of y?all (at least 43) who checked this one out are gonna jump right back as soon as they see someone replied. Sorry, but I am looking for some help. Anybody?????

OK, I'll bite. I am not quite sure of what you are talking about, but I have a T5 and not a Tx, so maybe yours is different. But on mine, if you go under 'Prefs' in the main menu, under ''Personal' there is an option for 'Owner.' There is also an option for 'Buttons,' where you can set the default for any of the hard buttons at the bottom of the Palm Pilot. On the T5, the electronic buttons on the sides of the writing pad can be set by tapping and holding the button. A list will come up which will allow you to change the option for that button.

Does that help?

But if you are talking about a shortcut such as a time or date stamp, where it will print the owner info when you use that shortcut; you've got me stumped. I didn't know it was possible to create shortcuts that were anything more than pre-determined text (e.g. 'mtg' --> 'meeting')...

Thanks for the good idea. What I had in mind was a shortcut icon on the desktop so if someone finds the TX (hopefully) they will see the owner icon and know where to return it (ha ha ha ha). My T3 had it, my M515 had it etc, but apparently not the TX.

If you have security assigned, normal password and / or quick unlock, and the TX is locked, when you turn it back on it has a button that can be pressed which says (of all things) OWNER. Pressing this button provides whatever information you've entered into the Owner setting of Prefs.

So, lock the TX when powered off. Turn it on. See the Owner button.

Hope this helps.

I am disappointed. No one knows the answer to such a simple question. Of course, I dont either, or I wouldnt have asked in the first place. Last chance to be a hero.

Halleluyah, that wasn?t so hard, was it??? Thank you IPL so very much, that is exactly what I was looking for. Somewhere in the transition to the new TX that program must have gotten lost. Since it was freeware, I didn?t have it in my section of registration codes saved. Thanks again.

Be careful of version incompatibility issues. The application that you have just downloaded was used for old palm devices using PALM OS 2.0. If you are able to use it, very good, but if something goes wrong, remove it immediately or you can verfiy with the developer of that application if it is compatible with PALM OS 5.0.

It is just a very simple program and appears to be fine. Of course, if there is a problem, zip it is gone. Thanks again for all your help, I knew the forum would come through again.

I tried the "Owner" program on my Palm TX and immediately started having problems. My launcher (LauncherX) started acting kind of funny (delays when icons were tapped; when grafitti area was was minimized, the launcher didn't fill entire screen). When I uninstalled the Owner progam, my Palm returned to natural functioning. It was worth a try, but probably too old of an app to work on OS 5. That was just my expirience...

I too use LauncherX, but I have had none of the problems you mentioned. I specifically tried the keyboard minimize, etc. The only time programs are slow to load is when they are stored on the card instead of the Tx, and none of it that bad (in my experience).

I'm glad to hear you're not having any problems. I noticed some as soon as I loaded the program, so I was quick to uninstall it. It seemed like a decent little program. I don't run Launcher X from a card, and I've never had a problem with it, so when it started acting funny, I didn't want to take any chances. I'd be curious to know if you continue to use it without problems. I may re-try it and try to figure out what is causing the bugs. Thanks for the info.

I dont run LX from a card either, but many of the other programs, I do. It is only some of the programs (the ones with large footprints) that take a while to load. It is certainly something I can live with, especially for the added assurance that if the Tx crashes, I still have most of the programs accessible on my card. In addition, I keep a current TX backup on two different cards. One with me at all times, and one at home, just in case TX with the extra card gets lost or stolen. One trick I taught myself was to copy my "Palm/Launcher" files from the primary card to my desktop, and then just paste them to the other two backup cards. That way, even if a card goes bad, I just pitch it and load one of the other two, do a restore, and I am totally current except for any calendar entries I made since the last backup. That too, I can live with in an emergency. Hope this helps, or perhaps too much info.

I just started using the "lock" function of my T-5...and I noticed that when my Palm is password-protected, there is an option to see who the owner is (as well as a password "hint"). So when you turn the Palm back on, and are promted to input your password, someone who doesn't know who the Palm belongs to can find out by selecting "Owner." I would advise putting a telephone number along with your name.

To set this up, under 'Prefs' select 'Security' and choose 'Password - Assigned'. Then what I did was go under 'Buttons' (also under 'Prefs'), then select 'More' to pick a feature that will occur when you drag your stylus from the graffiti area to the top of the screen. I selected 'Turn Off & Lock,' so when I am done using my Palm I just drag my stylus up across the screen. Viola, the Palm is off and locked! When you turn it back on, there is a prompt screen for the password, which also includes a button to find out who the Owner is.

The best part of this all is that it is all done with "organic" applications that are already on your Palm!

Cheers! M2
