Overrated (Actors & Actresses)

I totally agree. I don't know what's the big deal really.... she is not that good looking and there are many better actresses.

Scarlett Johansson - She was good in "Lost in translation" but apart from that I haven't seen any other 'great' performance.

George Clooney - Oscar? Are you kidding me?

Slightly OT, but relevant nonetheless:

This may offend younger posters... But the truth of the matter is when you are young (in your pre-teens and teens) you aren't that sophisticated, or wordly and what you expect out of a film and the reasons you go are vastly different from why someone in their 30s and 40s goes to see a film.

This doesn't mean every single young person is like this... But there are enough of them on a per capita basis across the country (and the world) on average, for studios to market movies specifically to them because these people DO exist -- And are accounted for via box office and DVD rental demographic breakdown -- Even if every single young person who posts on the internet supposedly "isn't" one of them because they are "too savy" for this kind of marketing ;)

They exist, or marketing research firms and studio PR departments wouldn't go after them with such a passion and spend millions specifically designing and making ads and products (movies; music; TV; etc.) which appeal to this age group more than any other.

Also, another resulting trend from this is appealing specifically to the female part of the teen demographic in particular. Look at how they often have multiple trailers for certian films designed to appeal to either a male viewer (action; fast paced; violence), or a female viewer (slower; romance and relationships emphasized). Hell, the former WB network was built around the teen girl trend of the late '90s with shows like "Dawson's Creek" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" after the success of "Titanic" at the box office thanks to teen girls going over and over again.

A more recent example is MTV. This entire network is now the cable equivalent to the WB as almost 90% of their shows are aimed at female teens such as "Room Raiders", "The Real World", "Laguna Beach", "The Hills", "Next", etc, etc -- All of which appeal to teen girls and the things they find entertaining (relationship dramas; dating; etc, etc).

However, even with all of this going on in the background fueling a lot of the decisions being made at the major studios...

The real (resulting) reason there is nothing really appealing at the box office for adults is because whenever the word teen or young person is used, this automatically -- and erroneously -- Is euqated with dumbing down, or over simplifying elements of a story, so this supposed target demographic can understand it better (and hence, recommend it to their friends who will also pay and see it, and so on and so forth).

This is the real problem, point blank.

Studios need to realize that making a movie appeal to a wider-audience does not necessarily mean treat that audience like morons and only cater to a specific portion (teens) of that wider-audience. If they did this, there would be just good films for anyone, regardless of chronological age, in my opinion... But they are a risk averse industry and don't want to take the chance that if they take this risk and it fails, they will look like fools and be out a lot of potential revenue. It's a Catch-22 with currently no real solution in sight.

Hunh - well, I really can't disagree with any of you, although I don't mind Kirsten Dunst (poor girl ;)).

Isn't it interesting, though, how Tom Cruise was changed? He was a fascist-loving freak in Taps, and didn't look to grow up to be anything other than a bully-type in minor roles. Then suddenly - Risky Business, and his whole market/marketting changed.

...I actually kind of wonder how that happened...

It would be the equivalent today of taking someone like the late Chris Penn and turning him into a heartthrob. Odd.

Anyway, I don't mind Lindsey Lohan, either, but I've only seen her in two films, and she was part of an ensemble cast. The truth is I wouldn't see films with the actors you mentioned (okay, I WILL see M:I III, but only on DVD), so I don't even know who some of them are, but it's clear their aiming mainstream movies at a younger audience.

Just doesn't appeal to me - and they wonder why fewer and fewer people are going to the theatre. *rolls eyes at the studios*

Overrated Actors:Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt. Are the ones that are the most overrating actors.

Underrated Actresses:Marcia Cross (Yes she's none for TV but she too good to not be in any movies), Amy Adams, She is really good and i just love her now since seeing Enchanted. I will post more another day.

Don't know about overrated, but Chris Tucker is definitely the most OVERPAID actor in Hollywood. I mean he's pretty funny and everything, but $20+ million for each Rush Hour move? Holy crap. He's only been in like 5 big movies. And 3 of those were the Rush Hours!

OMG, thanks you. Right now everywhere I turn all I can hear is Angelina Jolie being a super woman. I'm sorry, I just don't see it. She was great in Girl Interrupted, but after that, she just sort of spread her sex appeal, what with the gossips and everything. Gurgh..

Jennifer Lopez is overrated too.

I admit, I loved her in Selena and Anaconda (her pre-fabulous, fur wearing days)

But, now everything she has done, I give a thumbs down too.

I agree with Brad and Tom...
Another performer who I think is overated is Calista Flockhart

Think that Brad Pitt is overrated as an actor. He is hot, but I don't think he is talented.

"The good girl" was supposed to break her out of that mold but she couldn't stay away from the pretty gal roles for too long. She did a great job in "The Good Girl", she can contribute more to film if she gets/seeks better roles.

Hugh Grant is overrated in my opinion. He have limited range of 'faces' and as much as I love his natural accent I can't see him pulling off much else than British upper class roles. Granted ( :P), I LOVED him in Till We Meet Again and Four Weddings and a Funeral, I think most of his roles after the latter has been variations on the same theme (not so much consdiering characters but as in how he approches his characters and make them come alive). Too similar preformances, most of them.

I hate her a lot and the only reason she's popular now is because she's making Jennifer Aniston's life miserable

I agree with you about the names you mentioned...

But this is also how the mainstream industry/study system works, unfortunately. It is ALL about product placement than telling good stories these days. Remember the old saying "TV shows are just the stuff in between the commercials"? This is the sad state of affairs most mainstream studio movies fall into.

Also, it is no secret most movies are marketed toward the pre-teen and teen crowds more than adults, ironically. Ironically because movies are supposed to appeal to the widest audinece possible in order to maximize potential profits, but the sad reality is they cater to the younger crowds based on the false assumption they have more disposable income to spend on the droves of mindless action flicks and romantic comedies that are cranked out almost non-stop.

I don't want to sound like some sort of movie snob because really, I am not. I like all kinds of films, mainstream and independent as well as different genres... But the reason why there seems to be nothing for adults at the box office is because there really isn't and part of it is because of the youth-obsessed studio system who promotes the young teen actors (or actors who appeal to teens) over those who can actually act.

He has done some bad films, but watch him in Born on the Fourth of July, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, and Vanilla Sky. The aforementioned films are his best roles in my opinion

Wise words! I hate Tom Cruise and his intesive tryings to appear as a great actor (his role in the newest Robert Redford movie is horrible)

And what's happened to Robert DeNiro?!?!

I have to agree on Kirsten Dunst. I's kind of sad that I know exactly what you mean by how when I see her on screen I just think dirty. I can't really explain what exactly that means she just is.

Yeah, I think Anjelina's overrated.I liked her in Gia,but reckon she is counting on her ralationship with Brad Pitt to keep her on top these days...To keep 'em both,actually...

Overrated: Lindsay Lohan.

It is obvious her success is more because of her publicists and agents MORE than her talent. This isn't that uncommon and is a testament to how if one can market themselves well enough, everyone can overlook obvious shortcomings, I.E. talent.

There is no other explanation for how she gets roles alongside the likes of Merryl Streep, Al Pacino and others considering her "long" and "extensive" list of credits include such great hits as "Herbie Reloaded" and "The Parent Trap". She is also making her way up the power list with getting 6-9 million dollars per movie now which is another mind-boggling aspect, but not in the good way.

Granted, "Mean Girls" was a fairly decent satire on high school life, but a lot of that had more to do with Rachel McAdams and the supporting cast like Tina Fey and the writing most of all.

Underrated: Most of the TV actors and actresses working today like Kristin Bell, Emily Daschnel, David Boreanaz, James Masters. This is where the real talent should be coming from -- Not manufactured by Disney and other marketing gurus. Give these men and women good, feature-length roles and I gurantee you'll be getting your money's worth both as a studio and as entertainment fans.
