Overheating '99 Chevy Blazer?

I have a '99 Chevy Blazer, and it pretty consistently (every 6 mos. or so) begins to run hot (between 1/2 and 3/4 of the temperature gauge, if not higher). I have not had a working A/C in the past 4 years, and I was wondering if not having the A/C fixed would cause the car to overheat? If not, has anyone had experience with recurring overheating of this kind of car?
