Overdrive Button on a 1996 dodge ram pickup?

I was wondering if there was a sensor that controls the overdrive button on a 1996 dodge ram pickup 1500 4x4 with an automatic transmission and a 5.9 motor the button is off and everytime the light pops on my transmission wont shift past second gear without me starting it up in neutral and then putting in in drive
