overclocking the g1

So I have been using the free open overclock app on the market . At first I was affraid to use it , didn't want to ruin my g1 . Then I tried it . The factory set for the processer in the g1 is 384mhz hi and 248 low . So I was careful and set it at 384 hi and low . My phone ran fine . Didn't really notice a differance . For 3 days I kept that setting . Yesterday I set it to the max , 528 hi and low . I have been on that setting for a day now . My phone never ran better ! I'm on jf adp1.5 . It seems to make it run so much smoother , like its supposed to be at that setting ! The jf adp1.5 runs perfect . No lags ,force closes , stalling , nothing ! Anyone else try overclocking the processer ? How safe is it ? Anyone damage their phone doing it ? It really does seem to help the phone out . What I really was affraid that the battery life would worsen , but it hasn't at all .
 
i think its risks damaging your phone in the long run... not sure but thats what i have been told so i stayed away from it...

good to see you got some good results though
 
I don't think there is any danger at all. You aren't actually overclocking the CPU.

Remember, the CPU was designed to run at 528mhz.

The G1 was purposely "underclocked" to 384mhz to increase battery life.

I have my g1 set for 528mhz max and 245 mhz min. No issues...

Haven't tested battery life though. Its gonna be worse, but not sure by how much and its not a big deal for me as I always carry a spare.

Thats the thing about android that I love. I can choose performance or battery life, its my choice. If this was an iphone, apple probably would never allow an app like this to exist.

The iphone is underclocked too by the way and would probably benefit from a similar app.
 
really? thats interesting... in that case i might have to give that app a go.

just to clarify has there been anyone that has had problems "overclocking?"
 
From what I've read, people who are running 1.5 aren't having any issues with "overclocking". People with 1.1 have encountered freezing which is fixed by a reboot.

There's a few threads over at xda that discuss "overclocking" so you might want to go there and search around.

And like the OP said, there's definitely a noticeable speed increase when the CPU is set to 528mhz.
 
It's just like overclocking with a regular desktop CPU... HEAT is what kills.

With this app, are you changing just the MHz or are you changing the voltage also? If you're not changing the voltage then all should be fine. If you go too high, it just won't run right and you'll probably get random restarts, etc... kind of like how you'd get a BSOD in Windoze.
 
Its just changing the mhz. Like I said before, its not technically overclocking. You're just setting the max mhz to its original spec.

If you don't mind the battery hit, I would go for it.
 
like i said before .... big difference in performance , no difference to the battery (528mhz) . on jf adp1.5 , its like a full spectrum vitamin for the g1
 
It's very unlikely that you have access to the necessary system functions to make CPU clock speed changes, without having root-level access.

That's the point of rooting - having permissions to modify ALL parts of the phone.
 
I think there is a risk.

HTC could have underclocked the processor not just to save battery life, but to also make the chip run cooler for their current design. Running the CPU back to it's certified MHZ (overclocking) could cause it to run warmer than the G1 is designed for and having a father who worked in electronics repair for 20 years I can tell you excessive heat destroys a lot of electronic components.
 
I'm using the app... have been for awhile now. I don't really notice major performance improvement, but it hasn't seemed to have any effect on my battery life either. While it is possible that the lifespan of the phone could be shortened by "overclocking" it in this manner, I think the risk is rather small. I also think that it probably won't kill my phone before I wind up replacing it with another one anyway. Worst case scenario, it might shed 20% of my cpu's life expectancy -- considering I'll have a new phone about 40 to 50% into that life cycle, I might as well enjoy it running at its best while I use the thing.
 
Cool. I'm not rooted, so I'm just wondering... will it let you OC past the 5**? Like anything else, I'm sure that are chips that are binned even higher. No real point to it I supposed but kind of neat.
 
I'm in the same boat as you. I will probably be getting the next nice android phone so might as well get the most out of the one i have now.
