I started cycling in June of last year, rode all through the summer and was loving it. Mostly along bike paths, but because I live in the city I did have to do a fair amount of street cycling. In October my boyfriend put new tires on both of our bikes. He did the inflating, so I'm afraid I can't tell you what the recommended PSI was. On our first ride out on them we just went around the block to test them out. They were faster since we they were skinnier than our previous hybrid bike tires. I turned my bike slightly to turn onto the sidewalk and immediately fell off my bike. At the time I had no idea what had happened, but because I was going so slow I wasn't injured so it didn't bother me much.
The next we went out, it was for our typical 20 mile ride across the city and back. I noticed a few times that it felt like my rear tire was slipping out from under me, but thought maybe I was imagining it. But a block away from our apartment I wiped out in a big way. I don't even remember feeling the fall begin. One moment I was on my bike, not going that fast - I'd guess no faster than 15mph - and the next I was on the ground. I ended up fracturing my ankle and separating my shoulder.
It's not March and I'm still terrified of getting back on my bike. I've looked up the dangers of over inflating but this is about all I can find:
"An overinflated tire can bounce on surface roughnesses. This can cause dangerous interruptions in traction, particularly if it happens during cornering."
Is this what happened to me? I wasn't cornering, I was merely shifting slightly to the right and now I'm afraid of wiping out all over again if I get back on my bike.
Anyone with similar experiences? Did you change tires or just deflate them slightly? (I will obviously look at my tire to check what it should be inflated to first.)
