Other 2001 Toyota owners, mind giving me some input?

I believe my ECU has gone out. When it went out, it caused the transmission to "jump around". It was like it was trying to start out in 2nd gear, and then trying to jump into reverse, thus lurching forward. After MUCH research, the only conclusion I've been able to draw is the ECU went out.
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, did you replace your ECU as soon as it happened, and did you have to replace the transmission if you did?
It happened about 1 mile from my house, so I drove it home and it's still parked in the same place. Would the transmission be trashed that quickly, or could this be something that has been happening for some time now causing me to have to replace the transmission?
Also, before anything happened, did (or if you have not had any problems does) your transmission whine while in 1st gear?
Did it continue to whine after you got the transmission replaced.
It might be a normal thing for this car, but I've never had a vehicle that does that, so it kind of concerns me.

All input from your personal experience is greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much!
