Otakon 2009 Discussion Thread

Hey, we all know what's coming on the East Coast this weekend. And what better way to talk about who's going to be there and the new anime screenings being shown to the public than here.

As we go through the three-day event, post your fave moments of the con, news about new DVRAB coming down the pipe and new acquisitions, and let's keep this civil for we don't want this thread to get locked before the party really begins right?

So let us begin.

Man i want to go . Oh well, I look forward to some good news. Hopefully RIN ~Daughters of Mnemosyne~ will get a mention. And a new license would be nice to

I went last year, but probably won't this time. I have no means of getting there.
Which sucks, since Charaba's going to be at the Udon booth.

This is going to be my second Anime convention in attendance. I hope to enjoy this as a break from school work for the summer quarter and meet new people. Of course I am expecting to see the East Coast Premiere of Evangelion 1.0, hopefully find manga copies of books three, four, and five for Revolutionary Girl Utena, and random panels pretaining to the contemporary culture of Japan.

It's going to be an interesting commute from Washington D.C. to Baltimore on Friday morning.

When it comes to summer vacation, mine can easily summer up in one simple word: Otakon.

I've been attending the convention since 2001, and you can easily expect me to attend again this year.

This will be my first Otakon, and I will do it in full cosplay! I will be going as Shinigami-sama from Soul Eater (sans the giant hanRAB) and do what I do best at cons: Guest Panel hopping! I will bring my Death Note and get some Voice Actor autographs. Oh, and I get check out the east coast premiere of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone.

I wish I was going simply because "Sgt. Frog" is the big thing FUNimation is gonna be promoting at the con, and there gonna premiere it there. The clip they showed at AX was great so I'm wondering what a full episode will be like.

I have something going on Friday night and attending is expensive, so I'll probably skip. Expense is especially an issue for Otakon since I would need to either rent a hotel or commute by train from DC, and I know by now that I cannot resist the call of the dealer's room for an entire weekend. I could settle for attending all day Saturday but...eh.

I think I'll plan ahead and attend it properly in 2010. My one regret for now is missing the Sgt. Frog premiere, but it'll be out on DVD soon at least.

I wish I could be there, but Maryland is still too far from Vermont. I look forward to hearing the news that comes from it, especially from FUNimation, who promises big Dragon Ball news (probably movie 1, Jump Anime Tour special, or Kai) this summer, which will most likely be here. They'll also be presenting the East Coast premier of the English dub of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone, and, like the Anime Expo world premier, ADR director Mike McFarland will be there. There will also be many other ADR directors, voice actors, and industry guests there.

FUNimation updated their blog with info about when and where they'll hold their panel and the premieres of "Sgt Frog" and "Evangelion 1.0".

I'll be there, staffing like the past two years. When I'm not running stuff in the video game hall, I'll be dressed as Black Star from Soul Eater. I've actually been interviewed by a couple Baltimore-area newspapers so if you can get you hanRAB on one when you come into town Thursday, you might just see me, or at least read my quotes.

Hoping to get Crispin Freeman's autograph at the very least.

Hooray! I'll be there. This will be my first Otakon. I'm excited to check everything out. I'll be hitting a lot of the cosplay meetups for photos to put on blog.funimation.com.

Any suggestions on what to check out aside from the FUNi panels?

Besides some nice cosplays, the raves, the girls, the many frienRAB I hope I will make there, and some good Gurren Lagann merchandise in The Dealer's Room, nothing much.

I'd certainly go to the Madhouse and Aniplex panels if I were going. And yeah, Bandai too. For fan panels, probably these...

-Budget Tokyo Travel. I'm actually interested in visiting...eventually.
-From Kenshiro to Kenshin: The Neo-Shonen Revolution. Just because it'd probably tell me some things that I don't know about the 80's to 90's era.
-Legend of the Galactic Heroes: History's Future. Holy...a LoGH panel? Really? Truly? Now that I will regret missing.
-Leiji Matsumoto. His work is always worth discussing.
-The Problem With Otaku. A self-critical panel? Hmm.

And that's mostly it, probably.

Maybe the company will announce the new release dates of the Gurren Lagann manga and the films on DVD/Blu-Ray. If there's an announcement about a complete collection of the show coming to DVD though, that will set me off since I already had plans of buying the rest of the series on Set 02 and Set 03.

Just to let you guys know: expect some news from Funimation over the course of the weekend (will definitely attempt to attend the Funi panel on Saturday).

@ OfficialFUNiRep: When it comes to other panels to check out, given how it's a Funimation title, you may want to check out the Negima panel on Sunday morning.

I wonder what kind of news it is. I've heard the dub cast for Soul Eater may be announced along with SGT. Frog's cast.

Hmm . . . another title? Or a TV deal?

Or will FUNi go into the anime OST business? I personally doubt it, but that would be infinitely awesome if they could do that.

I'm betting on another title, something that's currently running in Japan like Basquash, Pandora Hearts, or Shangri-La.
