OT sorta Moose to buy Treo 650

I'm posting this here because of the continuing saga that some of you have been following.

I've decided to go back to a single converged device and that will be a Treo 650.

Reasons:
1. The new screen looks great.
2. Converged device - I've been carrying around both the T3 and the Treo 600 for about 6 weeks and it's just a pain.
3. Enhanced PIM applications are on the 650 ala the T3.
4. No Wifi - but I got to thinking about the amount of time that I'd use wifi around the house and I've got a new laptop coming in Jan that will have it but if I really am going to surf the net from my Treo in my home....I'm stupid. I've got a 19inch flat panel and the laptop and what am I going to see on any PDA screen while surfing....not much. I'll use the 650 for checking sports scores and that while out and about.
5. MS Exchange Mail push....corporately this will be a boom and this 650 would be the best way to handle it on a single device.
6. BT - I want a wireless headset and can use it for hotsync if I so choose...probably won't.

There is no "perfect" device at this time for me. The perfect device would be a Cobalt 320 X 480 with BT and Wifi and VG and no keyboard but thanks to TealScript and assuming it will work eventually with the 650 if it doesn't right out of the box....the 650 is as close to perfection that I can get to at the moment.

Your mileage may vary but for me...it's going to be the way to go.

What's the OS version on a new Treo? Hopefully NOT 5.4.

I just thought I'd quote a short excerpt one more time:

"thanks to TealScript"

God Bless you, citizen. TealScript is crashing on the T5, by the way. I'm sure it will be fixed soon, however. You won't have that problem or any of the others, and as you say, a "converged" device. Most excellent, MM.

OS is 5.4 but I think that the new Flash RAM is the cause of the issues and since the T5 "enhancement" has been posted my guess is that the Treo won't have the same issues. But the Flash RAM will cause some conflicts.....and it was to be expected.

The changeable battery on one unit over at TreoCentral already caused some corruption to a database but in defense of the issue.....the battery was changed while the phone was on.

Isn't that kinda like unplugging your PC while it's running and then plugging it back in without turning the power switch off.

I think it was you I asked why you were offloading your Treo 600? Interested to see you're heading back in that "one thing to carry" direction! The lack of Wi-fi looked to be a possibe minus, but your comments put it in perspective - my lappy has it and I've never even used it except in my own houses. I'm still waiting to have a look at the Treo 650, but can't see it being out here before the end of this year.

I'd be interested in your comments when you get yours.

When I get one....I'll let you know. It looks like Sprint (my carrier through corporate) will latch on to all production of the 650 for the balance of this year.

So it's doubtful they'll make their way to Hong Kong until after the first so I'll let you know.

I think the Treo 650 is PDA/Smartphone upgrade that T3 owners can look forward to (unlike the T5), with its built-in phone, improved/higher resolution screen, bluetooth and VGA camera.

The lower resolution screen and lack of bluetooth were what discouraged me from getting the Treo 600 before.

In preparation for my Treo 650 purchase, I've been using my T3 with the slider closed to get used to its smaller screen (this is the "downgrade" that Moose Man pointed out to me some time back). Except for viewing pictures (larger on T3), I think I can live with the screen (in exchange for the phone and camera additions).

While I was expecting a mega-pixel camera, I was not discouraged when a VGA camera was announced. I am now using a Nokia 7610 with a mega-pixel camera and the pictures are not so clear anyway (when compared to 1 megapixel cameras). VGA is good enough for a camera phone (my Nokia 6230's VGA photos look even sharper because the 7610's bigger pictures just emphasizes the imperfections).

I just hope that the Treo 650 will be available before Christmas so that I can make it the Xmas gift to myself.

Is the screen on the Treo 650 exactly the same dimensions as that on the T3 with the slider closed?

I have been trying to find the size on P1 but it has eluded me.

Ryetee, I think it is the same size as the Treo 600, and close to the size of the T3 with the slider closed. If you got used to the full T3 screen, then it could take some time to get adjusted to it.

I always use the soft keyboard of the T3 to input data so, most of the time, I work with only half the screen anyway. In fact, the hard qwerty keyboard of the Treo could turn out to be more suited to me.

The T3 is a good PDA and there's really no reason for me to upgrade to a new one, except that I am getting tired of carrying two units (the T3 and a Nokia 7610 phone) whenever I go out. The Treo 600 was not an option to me before (due to the screen and lack of bluetooth), and I love the Palm OS and softwares to migrate to the other options like the XDA II or Sony Ericsson P900 or 910. So the Treo 650 promises to be the ideal smartphone for me (until the rumored new Treo with full screen and no keyboard comes out).

My thoughts exactly. Love the T3 but with a similar sized screen, the all-in-one option attracts.

The screen of the 600 and 650 should be identical by dimensions but the 600 is narrower than the T3's screen, considerably.

T3 is 56mm X 60mm closed.
600 is 47mm X 47mm - all the time of course.

And to add to the saga:

Ed Colligan states that they will support the Wifi card on the 650 it will be down the road. There is some debate with one of the engineers so we'll have to hold onto our hats.

Also, I read an article today over at TreoCentral Discussion that states Sprint will unlock the BT modem (Dial UP Networking, or DUN) portion to enable the phone to be used as a modem with a laptop without the cable. Initially, this is to be turned off but a spokesperson from Sprint was email quoted in that discussion stipulating they will enable via a software update in the near future.

As long as the Wifi card will eventually work with the 650....this will be a premier device. It's not my panacea device but it's close.

I'm just waiting for Sprint to officially announce how to order and then it's off to the races.

OMT: Rytee, after carrying around both the T3 and the 600 for about the last 6 weeks.....converged is convenient over large screen capabilities of T3.

I really hate wires and I got to thinking about BT headset (which is already ordered BTW) PDA, and a Phone. This would mean I've have to carry a minimum of 3 items and by going converged would minimize that impact.

My only real complaint about the 600 was screen resolution and the keyboard (I'd still prefer G1 or G2) but then along came TealScript and it works on the Treo. It will probably take some time to update to the 650 but it will be worth it.

My ideal device would be the 650 - minus the keyboard and give me the screen space in it's place and then enable a Wifi card. So I'll settle for the 650.

The other thing that pushed me back to the 650 is the MSExchange email client builtin. Corporate is moving to an exchange server roll out with our new laptops in January.....it became almost a no-brainer at that time.

The replaceable battery was another plus.
