Who needs anything but the author on the attribution line anyway?
Anything else is a waste of space. The message ID (and date) serves
no purpose in the attribution line. It's redundant.

No, not really. I still think it's useless but it's standard
convention. And it's all on one line. Most people don't bother
changing the default attribution string that came with their
newsreader.

I don't even remember how I set mine. Oh, there it is: Date and
author. Short and sweet enough for one line. i think the date is
mildly useful for people who might not have the previous message and
might wonder how old a post really is.

It looks to me that *my* newsreader put it there. I don't remember
doing that or setting anything. And isn't that *your* message id up
there, on a separate line by itself?


I was going to complain some more, but duh, if my newreader is the one
that put your message id up above, on a line by itself, and without the
date, I guess that's not the fault of *your* newsreader!

I checked the help on my newsreader, and the attribution is not
configurable. I like having the message id in the attribution, because
my newsreader lets me retrieve that whole article with a single click.

You lost me again, Dan. Your newsreader is putting the message-id and
author at the top of every post you respond to. So does Cheryl's. I
chose just to put author and date. It is the first line of this post.

Yes, that is YOUR newsreader that does that.


It would be unusual for a newsreader not to allow custom attribution
strings. It's usually a line that reads something like

"In %m on %d, %a wrote:"


I have a button that will switch to view the whole thread which is
easier than jumping to individual Message-Id's.
