OT Price of gas in Italy?

If you stick to the autostrade it will take nine hours to get fromMilano to
Salerno (system didn't understand Santa Maria di
Castellabate) and cost 51 Euro in tolls.

But what is the point? If you want Salerno, you fly into Naples, you don't
drive the entire A1 from Milano! The A1 is a really awful road with a now
permanent holdup south of Florence.

They were commuter cars. One of the trips was from Berne Switzerland to
Milan, then another from there to Padua, then Padua to Nice. The
compartment cars in Germany and France were much newer, much cleaner....
and ran on time.

Oh yes... I am also aware that it is just inside the border coming from
Italy and that more than 99% of the trip was in Italy.

One reason is huge savings on airfare. I was able to save $900 flying into
Milan versus Rome. That buys 100 in gas or 4000 miles of driving. While
some people think it is a big deal, for me, driving 500 mile in a day is no
big deal. Not every day, mind you, but one or two. The first day of
driving will be to Rosano, (outside of Firenze, near Pontessieve) about
equidistant from Rome. We stayed there last trip.

The other is just the particular places I want to see. The second week we
will be in Santa Maria di Castellebata, but a side trip will be to Paterno,
birthplace of my wife's father. That round rip will be about 350 miles.
Worth it when it is someting she has wanted to see for many years.

Milan to Reggio De Calabria, as an example, is 780 road miles, not quite
the length of the country.

But they don't run to some of the places I will be going. The villa where
we will stay in a 2 mile hike up a hill from the nearest bus line that is a
few miles from the train station. A 40 minute trip to Firenze by car is a
few hours by walking and bus and train. Not to mention the fact my wife
would be in the hospital by halfway up the hill. If we stayed in town,
different story.

I have about 1500 miles of driving with them. While others freat them, I
admire their skills. One of the roads I want to travel from Bologna to
Firenze is used by the test drivers from Ducati motorcycles. It has
something like 127 turns in 10 miles going up the mountain. I'm also going
to drive the road along the Amalfi coast. Been wanting to do that for
years. Actually, ever since I saw pictures of it.
