Barb, who sometimes uses tabs but prefers open windows and is able to
have more than one open side by side if I want them that way in case I
want to compare stufff, seeing both at the same time, and who uses a key
on the Mac that shows me what windows are open, across all apps.

Hmm, the only way I know to "disable" that feature is to not use it.
When I want a new window, I do a cmd+n (for new). Macintosh. Cmd+t
will get me an empty tab. I like open windows.

For those who want a dedicated window from a FF tab, just drag the tab
outside to the desktop and it creates a new window from the tab
(removing the tab from the old window).

I think my dislike of tabs is twofold. I don't like using the mouse
and I don't like the browser window space the tab bar takes up.
Besides, what's the point? I can row through multiple windows with my
index finger. Tabs gives me nothing I can use.

An alternative keyboard-way to navigate through different windows on a
Windows PC is to use the "Alt+Tab" combination of keys. While holding
down the "Alt" key, press "Tab" a few different times to rotate through
the different open windows and programs.

Hey, I don't use the tabs either. I like the open windows for the
reasons stated above.

Either did I until, on a hunch, I just tried it ;-)

To further enhance that feature, If you're using Windows 7, you can
drag two tabs and/or windows to opposite sides of the screen and it
will create two windows of equal and maximum size, side by side so
that you can compare them - Melba Style. And bext of al, it won't
remember those coordinates and sizes so that your next session is
normal.

I'm with you on that, mostly in word processing where reaching for a mouse
is a major PITA. Cut, paste, delete, undo, select, etc., can all be done
with keyboard shortcuts much quicker. I do it in the browser to, but to a
somewhat lesser extent. In forms, for example, I would never move between
form fields with a mouse when the tab button does it faster.

Youre doomed, Marty. I used to double sign all the time. Still do.
I've figured it out. If you stay in rfc long enough, you will
degenerate into shelly. Same thing as a radioactive half life. Stay
long enough and yer brain will become curmudgeon lead. ;)

That's pretty cool. I didn't know that. At least I learned something
from this insane rant. I checked and it will also drag it back when
you want. You can also change the order the tabs appear from left to
right by dragging them back and forth. When I was routing myself for
home inspections that was a very useful feature.

Both of you assume everyone wants to use a mouse.

I don't.

That's the prob with windows, gui's, etc. Why I gotta reach for the
damn mouse? It's an extra step, wastes time, and can be a potential
RSI problem. If you wanna use a mouse, fine by me. I don't and I
don't think I should hafta be forced into it, any more than you should
be forced into not using it.

That's the major problem with software, today. Other ppl make
arbitrary decisions on my behalf. Do you want others to respect your
opinion about your likes and dislike about food. That's what we do
here on rfc. Why should it be different about computers, software,
and how they're used? Do you like being forced to buy frozen pizzas?
Hell no! Well, I don't like being forced to use a mouse. Pretty
simple concept, eh?

The simple concept is it's a free program and no one is forcing you do
anything except the gremlins in your head that are making you type
stupid shit that makes you look dumber with every post. If you don't
like firefox don't use it and find something you like.
