Isn't it funny what things make great sales pitches-- but when it
comes down to it, aren't worth the effort [to most of us] to study a
manual?

That was a brain fart. The *first* thing I used was a cassette
adapter. The sound was great, but the Impala has some weird
auto-eject thing that just won't behave. [so if you have a 2000-2005
GM you might have troubles]

I replaced it with a gadget that plugs into the lighter and the
headphone jack of the mp3 player. *That one* transmits using FM radio
waves. [about $10, I think] Usually fine- but not perfect.

It helps to have a 23 yr old audiophile in the house-- but just in
case you haven't seen it yet- Sansa has an excellent bunch of forums
on their site-

something, I haven't missed it yet ;)

[mine's a Sansa fuze- but I like it for the same reasons]

For the same reason MS *is* the best selling OS and Sony Betamax lost
to VHS, marketing, baby.

Apple learned their marketing lesson well.

The Sansa players are mp3 players like the shuffle.

Granted, I don't have many 21st century songs on my player- but I've
only 'needed' to go to itunes 3 times in the past 5 yrs. [and
Amazon may still be the biggest new book retailer out there-- but
they've got plenty of competition these days]

I'm still in awe of my little Sansa player that sounds so much better
than the cassettes and 8-tracks I was 'raised on'- and can hold about
8000 songs that I can flip through by artist, album, genre, or title.

Amazon has an extensive collection of mp3's- emusic is getting
better-- and I got an 'all you can download' membership from
mp3panda.com for this year for $100. [normally $0? a year and
15cents a song]

Apple is 'just another player' in the mp3 department these days.

Similar to my two run-ins with Apple, the first being with an Apple

using a full fledged Unix mainframe. The experience was much like
being told I hadda ride a Big Wheels while my adult Schwinn bicycle
was in the shop. The 2nd time wasn't much better. Fortunately, both
times were painful for less than 24 hrs.

Ain't that the truth? I bought a new car a year ago. I don't know how
to work the sound system, which is OK since I don't want to use it for
much. There must be three inches worth of manuals that came with the
car, of which about a half inch is for the sound system. There's no
room in the glove compartment for gloves! I got the standard sound
system, it didn't cost anything extra. It does AM/FM, CDs (including
MP3), satellite radio and you can hook in your MP3 player through the
center console, but control it from the dashboard. The satellite radio
came with a 90 day free subscription. We opted not to continue it. I
burned a couple of CDs from my computer. I planned to burn MP3s, but
didn't have enough music, so they are regular sound CDs. I checked to
see that they worked, but have never listened to them other than that.
Neither my wife nor I have MP3 players. The kids do, but they seldom
use the car.

I've long ago concluded that Apple users are engaged in a sort
of continuous retail therapy. They actually like having their
money drained away on an ongoing basis. It makes them feel good
to spend money.

I can relate to wanting to spend a little money unnecessarily for
a sort of psychological boost, but I try not to be so mindless
and compulsive about it.

Yeah, maybe then I would have known about the bluetooth at
least. The thing about manuals, in general when I have a question
to look up, they never seem to cover it.

I was just saying the other day, I need a teenager!

Thanks, I'm going to check it out.

I don't buy many these days, but I do like CDs for my car.

I just bought a song online yesterday. It is certainly very convenient.

I can get music any way, I just don't have to go through iTunes.
I just drag the album cover to my sansa and it's instantly loaded.
And I can see the album title on the little screen it has.

I used to walk around with a Walkman dragging on my shorts, so
I was really excited to find that little Shuffle that clipped to my
shirt or whatever. After it broke, I looked around for a different
brand. This little player I have is just as easy to carry around, but
I find it a million times easier to use. And not one blinking light to
interpret. Heh.

When it was introduced I read that, bizarrely, the iPad does not have a
mode where it simply functions as a normal cell phone. Perhaps this
has been fixed.

I've been saying clip for short, but it's a Clip+. Whatever that
means, I don't know the differences. That fuze looks nice, too,
somewhat larger and I imagine holds a lot more. I could get an
extra memory card if I wanted more space.

That really made me laugh. Same here.

Exactly. If I spent some time on it, I could really organize my
music any way I want it. But I'm lazy.

With 256GB SSD, 12 GB 1.6GHz DDR3 RAM, it's a pretty stout box and it
still takes 1hr + to transcode Blurays!

Yeah, way cheap. I've got 1TB - 2TB disk all over the place. I have
a Windows Server with 7TBs and a 2TB NAS in addition to the 2TB on the
main box, and 4TBs on the secondary. I also have an eSATA 4-bay drive
enclosure that i ahve 6TBs on that I haven't used yet. Capacity is
really cheap.

Apple has had a big say in the future of computing for quite some
time. Remember around '96 when they released the first iMac and it
was remarkable b/c it had no floppy drive and that it had USB ports?
It was ahead of its time by a few years. Similarly, the Macbook Air
when it first dropped about 2 years ago.

Still, despite alot of terrible things about Microsoft, the future is
best when there are multiple competitors out there, but Microsoft is
so slow and really so UN-visionary that it's working its way out of
the limelight. It will take a while b/c of all the momentum it
has(had), but eventually they will lose out.

Curiously, among the terrible ideas it had was to couple their OS so
much with IE.

I know how you feel, Nancy!

You're very flattering, Jim - but to be honest, I don't know. I'm in
the "Nancy" group. I have lots of places I can plug something into,
but I've only used them for re-chargers.

Don't feel bad. Color me ignorant too. I babysit 3 days a week
(she's 3 months old now) and got a "base" for their carseat just a
couple of days ago. Son had to install it in my car today because I
didn't have the heart to fiddle around with it.

I do not miss the keyboard, I prefer the iPads touch keyboard and you can
have the older obsolete software. It is too big for a cell phone. The iPad
does have a microphone and can make calls through the Internet. The iPhone
can do almost everything an iPad can but to small for comfortable reading.
One can sync their Mac, iPhone and iPad wirelessly and automatically using
the cloud.

I am typing this from my iPad. I will never own a laptop again. Ten hour
battery life, easier to hold to view books and magazines, On this iPad,
eBook reader, my GPS guide, my contact list, weather alert, night star
guide, Internet radio of twenty thousand stations. Graphing Calculator that
blows my TI 89 out. I can watch movies and TV shows on it, my TV remote
control, Sketch pad, turn my lights thermostat up/down, Drawing pad for
main computer, iPod that runs my Bluetooth speakers. Photo Viewer,
Calendar, Journal keeper, keep track of diet and blood pressure, I can
watch YouTube and most import of all I have access to thousands of cooking
recipes and cooking information at my fingertips.

As for magazines, I already read two magazines online. They do not need
Apples subscription service. I receive a monthly email and go to the
magazines site and download the magazine in PDF form. However with the
iPad, interactive magazines which will be the future and better than PDF's
will need Apples help. I will take iTunes over the music and book stores
and soon the magazine stores. Book stores are the way of the music
stores... History. MY local Borders is even closing so that makes Barnes
and Noble the closet and thirty miles away. Paper is going the way of the
Dodo bird. Since I bought my iPad eight months ago, I have not used my
printer once! Paper is history, I read everything on this iPad.

Also the iPad is the number one game machine also. Rumor has it the next
Apple Operating system for the Mac will be like the IPad with the Push
technology as well as Multitasking.

There is one MAJOR drawback and it is a big one. With so much personal
information in an all in one compact device. It does help big brother to
keep track of you also, if he wishes. Privacy is also going the way of the
Dodo.
