I think they work as fantasy blockbusters. Although I must say that ROTK particularly seemed to overdo the special effects so much that it looked like a video game at times.
I havent read the books, but the general consensus is that the film didnt go as in depth as the books did, not paying as much attention to characters and things, which I feel makes a more interesting and deep film.
I have to say I was pleased with Mystic River's wins. Sean Penn was wonderful and he fully deserved it.
