Oscar Nominations, was Benjamin Button really that good of a movie?

What people have to remember about any award ceromony whether it be film, music etc, is that people such as press junkets, get invited by the film/record company to interview their stars, they get luxury accomodation, food, treatment in return for brilliant reviews. Industry insiders make the decisions as to who's nominated for award shows such as OSCARS/BAFTAS/GRAMMYs/BRITs etc. it's all fixed. Benjamin Button is probably ok, but all the hype means it's gonna get loaRAB of people seeing it.
Hope this helps.

I read this thread before I knew I'd go and see Benjamin Button:p Never thought I'd pay to see Brad Pitt, not that I mind him, he just doesn't do it for me:)

My partner and I just came home from the cinema, and we both loved the movie. It's almost three hours long and we didn't think it was a minute too long.

I know that's just our opinion, mind.

I don't understand how a man can get nominated for an Oscar, by simply being in the scenes. Brad Pitt spenRAB most of the movie being upstaged by the other actors in the scenes. They all act, he is...present. It doesn't ruin the movie, that's not what I'm saying, they've been clever enough to camouflage his lack of dramatic talent, but anybody could have played that part. It just requires being present. I find myself offended on behalf of the other nominees. He does the best he can, not that much is really required, frankly, but it's not an Oscar worthy performance in my book. Not considering how much some of the other actors work. Some people were overlooked.

The curious case of Benjamin Button should be up there with the best of them. Great movie. I hope it wins some of them oscars too.

The movie is riveting and manages to suck you in emotionally.

The film has charm, warmth, depth and overall, its extremely touching. A film that deals with love, rejection, discrimination, determination and loyalty, with great acting and an excellent script.

The long length of the movie may concern some, but personally, I didn't want it to end.

I notice some have had negative things to say about it, which is understandable, as all the award nominations, praise and raving reviews probably annoy the ones who just didn't get it.

This film is for the mature thinker, and the lack of slap stick comedy and insane action sequences involving buildings and people get blown up might be seen as 'boring' to some.

This film gets a 10/10 from me.

Well, when you put it like that...you sound like an arrogant idiot. Of course people only dislike it if they're stupid, nothing to do with it being FORREST GUMP ALL OVER AGAIN, BY THE SAME GUY, BUT NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD. Nope, nothin at all to do with that.

i thought it was a fantastic film great acting, imaging just everything about it worked . That and Slumdog millionaire deserve all the praise they get. I dont think i could pick between those 2 films but i hope they both pic up a few awarRAB .

Whoa, you talking to me? Firstly I think you need to calm down

Secondly, after reading your statement in caps, I'm wondering if you have even seen the movie...?

The storyline and context are nothing like Forrest Gump. The only things similar about the two movies are the writer, and a few signature angles that he may have used. e.g The love plot. I enjoyed Benjamin Button far more than Forrest Gump anyway, as I found it more satisfying and overall a better movie.

Besides, Forrest Gump was nearly 15 years ago. Who cares if the writer wants to use a familiar formula or two from time to time. They are his movies and he can do what he wants. It obviously worked then and worked now, as both films were highly successful.

The conclusion is that they are not the 'same movie', as you have suggested, and only a fool would say they are.

Regarding the comment that you took offence to about 'not getting it', I was simply implying that it may not be ones 'thing'. I wasn't calling anybody stupid.

Anyways take a chill pill and go watch the movie - You might like it ;)

I think it looks interesting, and I would like to see it one day. Brad Pitt is not a good actor and I can't take him even a bit seriously since he got involved with that woman.

I'm always calm brother, the caps thing was just to highlight my point. Or, the point of thousanRAB of people who've seen the movie, including me (probably before it was even in theaters here). You need to go find the video of all the similarities side by side, it's enlightening and funny. And sorry but your statement implied "didn't like it? then youre TOO STUPID"

this is why I don't think it deserves all the nominations (except for make-up)

edit: the video is gone :( it was a comparison of all the similarities between Forrest Gump and Benjamin Button with scenes played side-by-side

I saw that video the other day and I thought it was pretty funny!!! Its just abit of a piss take - nothing too serious. If one was to get technical though, its obvious that they've just cherry picked certain things that fit with the satire type of humour they wanted and intended to use.

e.g

- Comparing a young disabled Forrest Gump having trouble walking to an old man (Benjamin Button) having trouble walking. (not the same thing really)

- Comparing the love elements (love happens everyday)

- Comparing the way that the lead character associates with a black man (shock horror) - Note - Also, considering Benjamin was adopted by a black family, and raised around the black community, is it really suprising that he befriended a black man?

- The lead character gets a 'job' (another shocker)

The rest of the camparisons are irrelevant really. Its easy to pick a few scenes out of a 3 hour movie and make it seem identical to another. If you think about it, you could do that with most love stories, most action movies, dramas, comedies and horrors. Most genres use similar formulas.

We are talking about the Oscars here, I thought I'd remind you.
When you yourself are defending the film by saying that it's a successful formula which works, that doesn't really help it.
'Who cares?'
Well, like I say, we are talking about the Oscars here.

You did seem to be implying that people who didn't like it weren't that intelligent when you said that this film is for the mature thinker. It did come across as extremely patronising even if you were unaware that it did.

The Godfather v The Departed v Goodfellas v The Godfather 2 v Scarface

is just as valid an arguement as Button v Gump.

As for Brad Pitt, he's a fine actor but that doesn't mean he'll ace every role.
Even De Niro and Brando have turned in crap.

I just saw this and I have to say the only thing I enjoyed was the make-up and the woman that played Benjamins Mum. It was terribly boring. If this movie wins above Slumdog Millionaire for Best Picture in the Oscars it will be a sin!!!

I does not anywhere in the same league as Forrest Gump and at times it reminded me of Big Fish- but Big Fish was a million times better and much more engaging.

The acting is good, though i don't think that Pitt's performance in it is Oscar material. But, for the technical things, Button definitely deserves to be nominated.

I found it a ridiculous film, full of absurdity. Bad Pitt's performance is nothing than many an actor couldn't have pulled off and pulled off better.

There is no comparison between this film and Forrest Gump and Pitt can't hold a candle to Tom Hanks.

I think he will win though.

I can't believe I'm writing this, but Anne Hathaway deserves the Best Actress award for Rachel Getting Married. The film is also outstanding, but it's not nominated (and why isn't Jonathan Demme nominated?).
