Orphan

I can't watch horror films, i am a gigantic wimp but heard ppl talking about this now i have read this thread i am INTRIGUED!! Please someone post the storyline and the 'twist' in spoilers just for me. I know that is strange since i never intend to watch it but if you read this thread and hadn't seen it you would want to know lol!!

Middle-class, professional family have a son and daughter and tried for a third, which was still-born.

The couple decide to adopt a third child and are charmed by a youngn Russian girl at an orphanage. They adopt her and although they know she's 'different' she seems to be almost the model child.

As time moves on, it becomes clear that she is not all she seems and has a personality disorder that means she's essentially unfeeling and uncaring. She manipulates the whole family to the point where they think the mother is being irrational and has unfair feelings against the new daughter.

The big 'twist' is that the orphan is not Russian and is not even a child, she is a 33 year old woman who was born with proportional dwarfism which causes her to have the appearance of a child. She had escaped from a mental home in Estonia and had a record of being 'adopted' and then making advances on the husband of the families, usually then going on to kill most, or all, of those families.

Unfortunately, the synopsis does the actual film very few favours. It's good, go see it.

Thanks, i also looked it up on Wiki. SounRAB good but i swear i wouldn't sleep for weeks if i saw it. In fact bet i don't sleep tonight just from reading about it!!

Ahhh, I've found out more about this:

Apparently, in the original plan for the film, we learn that Esther used her disbility in order to attract wealthy paedophile customers and acted as a child prostitute from the age of nine (hence she continues to claim to be and make herself appear nine years old) and it is this which drove her mad. It also explains her fascination with bizarre sex - as painted in her artwork.

The subject matter was considered too adult/worrying to obtain an R rating in the States or a 15 rating here and so was dropped. When you know about it, it is a shame it was dropped as it would have enhanced the film even more.

Hopefully that part of the storyline will make it intact in an unrated DVD/Blu-ray release.

Yes, that's well covered in the film:

She uses the ribbons to hide scars that were caused by her struggling to get out of the straightjacket the mental facility had to keep her in.

TowarRAB the end of the film she removes the ribbons and displays the scars.

I saw this today and was quite surprised at how good it was! Terrific little film!

The girl who plays Esther was so believable but god damn she was scary as hell!
Her transformation from little girl to crazy adult at the end was incredibly done.

I also tried to figure out what the twist could be but certainly didn't think it was that!

The girl who plays Max was adorable and i too was invested in the characters and wanted no harm to come to them. Trust the husband to not believe his wife and look how he turns out! :D

I am in love with Vera Farmiga! :)

Cracking horror slash thriller.

awesome movie, would have never guessed the twist at the end.

I thought that

the little girl had a spirit of a jelous, insane ex girlfriend controlling her.

btw How cute was Max?:D

I really liked this film, i did see that twist coming! TowarRAB the end of the film i felt was amazing, it really had me on the edge of my seat. I also agree with a lot of other people about how cute lil Max was, i was so scared something was going to happen to her.

I thought the film was so-so. Although it had a couple of scary moments and kept me interested thoughout, it was 20 minutes too long! If the son had any sense, he would have told the parents what had been going on and for the dad...he was so wet!!!

I got the twist halfway in because:-

I thought the girl was so grown-up in her actions and this alerted me to the final outcome
