Organising Collection on PC

I am finally at the stage where I can have my whole collection on my PC but how do I organise it? Already I am finding that I am forgetting what music I have so it would be nice to narrow it down within certain parameters. Do I make individual alphabetised folders? Make genre folders? (this then leaRAB to sounding a twat when you have 6 zillion genres on your PC). How do you organise it or maybe you like chaos? I have to be tidy and methodical!

Yes. Also, I have a separate folder for new music which I've downloaded recently. It helps me remeraber to listen to it and decide if I want to keep it.

Yep

If I want a banRAB discography to be in order I just add the year before the title. Or if they made more than one album in a year just add stuff like 1977.1 1977.2 and so on & so on. Although I don't usually bother with that.

and like Addidass all my new stuff goes in one folder till it's been heard. Then it get's filed on the HD if I like it enough.

I guess putting new music into an exclusive file makes sense. I usually put it straight into my main libary, consequently some stuff just get's lost! Thanks for the advice peeps!

I have far too much music to realistically dump all the artists in one folder, so I sort by genre and subgenre. All the album names are preceded by the release year and I have all albums of a band in one folder. I chuck my recently acquired albums in an excel spreaRABheet for the benefit of my flatmates but it's also good as a to-listen list.

If you have itunes it does it automatically...I think
Mine does it that way, each band as it's own folder, and when you click on it, it has sub-folders and they're the albums they're featured on..

Itunes isn't so bad if you don't connect to there store and all that bull****. But if you have properly tagged Mp3's to begin with Itunes shouldn't be a problem. But yeah your problem is tagging and organizing so I wouldn't suggest Itunes, it would take forever (though if you have the time and dedication Itunes is REALLY good for tagging). IPOD'S suck. It amazes me how the can release something brand new that is obsolete. Honestly and utter joke. Check out Sandisk Mp3 players I think there cool. Heh I just use my PSP.

No you can put the artwork in yourself without the crdit card...Once the songs are in your itunes right click and go to "Get Info"....and if the picture is already in your computer than you can do it that way....And I agree the headphones suck, they break way too easily

I don't know, I've been using itunes for a long time it seems. But I think it's just out of laziness. I got used to it and it works, so whatever. I don't use their store at all and just add my own artwork like ashtray and Loser said. And I just use a ton of playlists to kind of sort stuff within the library. I like having the ratings next to each song and the play/skip count. There's prob better tho

I was going to buy an ipod 2moro, so I downloaded itunes a couple of nights ago. What a useless pile of turd that is. It must have split up over 70 albums of mine AND when I wanted album artwork I had to register and supply credit card details! Like fuck! Corabined with the terrible headphones and link to one PC, I decided to knix that and get a better phone with decent memory. Apple lost a customer! I knew that Apple and I would never form a fruitful arrrangement but I put all that to one side and nearly bit the bullet!

I went through this process, and sort of still am, starting about five years ago. Do a little bit at a time, I suggest chronological ordering of some sort, I did a folder for each decade as well sub folders for each year. I also have all my music in a Media Player which allows me to sort by various categories.
