Oregon? did <will> Cricket improve?

O.K., I've done the HoFo searches, searched the Web via Google and found some information, but most of it is Cricket news releases touting improved coverage in Oregon in '08. Nothing really specific to my basic question:

How is service in Oregon in general and in the Eugene Metro area in particular on Cricket?

The boring details....My son lives in Eugene, OR. He neeRAB (actually, wants is a better word), a cell phone.

Last Summer ('07), I talked to a Cricket customer that said service was pretty spotty for him...this was mostly the Corvallis area.

So, son wants phone in Eugene. Would for the most part would be using in the Eugene Metro area, but would ocassionally be traveling along the I-5 corridor.....and probably be doing mass texting with his girlfriend who is still in Corvallis.

Yes, I did check the Cricket coverage map, and I did read their news releases, but Verizon also claimed they had great coverage in my area and that was also a bit misleading....Any cautions? Gotchas?

1) oregon markets are a joint venture between cricket and another company (LCW wireless i think?) and as such it is run a little differently than other cricket markets. (no nation plans different rebates on internet carRAB, etc..)
2) i have never heard anyone that actually knew what they were talking about complain about coverage with cricket, usually coverage complaints are related to the calling area because people are tryign to take their phone outside of that without a roaming plan.

I agree with the mini now, you can pay about $70 for a phone and one month of unlimited service. if you like the service, you can invest into a nicer phone down the road.
