Opinion: Terminator 2 hasn't aged well

I agree with this.

This is another aspect of T2 I don't like.

The 'softening' of the Terminator didn't sit well with me.

I much preferred to cold hearted Terminator & human protector of T1, as I just don't see the point of a Terminator that's all fluffy & nice & not wanting to kill anybody.

I choked when I read this. Dude, the CGI in Jurassic Park is still unbelievable.

You need to remember, back in 1991 when ILM started work on the film, visual effects artists had absolutely no benchmarks to compare their work to, and so during the 2 years of post-production work ILM did, they just kept adding and adding and adding and adding textures and layers to their CGI.

I mean, the T-Rex escape scene could be put into any film in the last five years, and still be deemed incredible:

LOOK AT IT!

Except it didn't. The first part did. Once John Connor is rescued and he figures out what is going on, he becomes proactive and seeks out and rescues Sarah. That's not really a chase sequence. And then they are safe, until Sarah seeks out Dyson to kill him, and together they seek out the labs to destroy those. For most of the film, the protagonists are not merely fleeing or being chased, they are proactive and following their own agenda. It enRAB with more chasing, but the balance over-all is much better.

It has more soul than the first film, partly because of how it develops Sarah's character, and because of John learning to be a leader and Arnie learning to be more human. There's so much more going on than in the first film.

I'm watching it now on ITV2 and agree that it doesn't look too good but thats due to the third rate copy that they're showing.

This film neeRAB to be in proper widescreen with black bars top and bottom and with deep blacks.

Not this washed out copy.

I've always thought T2 is massively overrated, much like Aliens (though I do still love Aliens) in that respect, both inferior sequels that a lot of people seem to think are better than the first movie.

Personally I much prefer T1, simply because it's a much better film, but then there are just as many people who think T2 is the better film so each to their own.

Also, in many places the transfer between CGI and models is seamless.

The only aspect that jars is the colour of some of the dinosaurs in daylight, they seem too shiny and orange.

...because its established John Connor programmed The Terminator to be like that. Have one goal but at the same time keep his younger version sane by not murdering everyone in front of his eyes.

But he was still programmed to kill people by the time he got to 90's. He had one mission, to protect John Connor and the rest were fair game. He had another mission parameter. To do everything he said including don't kill people. I think it's only when they reset his learning CPU did he really understand why.

The first film is a much better movie. Its self-contained and gritty without being over the top or pompous (like T2). Its a basic story of survival, and falling in love.

It is far more impressive a film, due to its scale.

It was so much better.:)

Why do they release a film then re release a better version?

What's the thinking behind cutting out chunks that a film neeRAB? I mean they film it, they follow the script and then they just cut them out, I've never understood why.

On the fundamental level of 'a machine arrives and pursues our heroes until they fight back' T2 was more of the same. As indeed was T3.
Salvation got away from that but the story it chose to tell was dull as dishwater.
At least the TV series broke up the formula a bit.

I suppose it's the context in which the CGI is used. The Abyss used CGI before T2 but ages much better because there isn't any identifiable timeline. The 'water tenticle' still looks pretty good even by today's standarRAB.

Well I wouldn't say I never rated T2, it's enjoyable enough but i'm certainly in the camp that thinks it's vastly overrated. I love True Lies though, great movie if you ask me!
