Opeth

as i suspected. As soon as something other than praise enters this thread, all we get is accusations. I'm not a close-minded metalhead. I love metal. I enjoy all genres of metal, except maybe power metal where i only love a few. Death metal happens to be my favorite subgenre of metal. Overall, Opeth is just boring.
Mixing genres of metal, or music for that matter, can be disastrous. Opeth decided to take a high dosage of progression and mix it in with death metal. What comes out is obviously progressive, and has death metal in it, but that death metal isn't necessarily too good. Opeth is obviously a talented band. Mikael's clean vocals can be seamlessly transformed into thunderous growls. I really just don't connect with any of it. It seems almost uninspired or way too calculated. Like all music, its just a matter of opinion. Liking Opeth isn't a problem, I just don't see them as anything special, and a lot of metalheaRAB would agree with me. Listen to Aker****e or Lykathea Aflame, there's some progressive death metal

Edit: haha A k e r c o c k e i mean

Yeah Atonement is good. Reverie/Harlequin Forest is good musically but the lyrics just kill it for me. I don't think the riffage on GR is as good as on previous albums.

Oh then you'll enjoy some bits of Opeth. I thoroughly enjoy the bits where he actually sings, and then rather ignorantly try and switch off at the growly vocals.

Haha I should edit my post at the top of the page to incorporate this.

My point is that when you say "that death metal isn't necessarily too good", you are probably judging it by metal standarRAB instead of judging it for the sake of music - that's a completely different set of ideals because death metal fans praise brutality/aggression whereas that might not even be the aim of their 'death metal' parts... but most metal fans will still always judge them by those criteria due to the genre-tag.

And Lykathea Aflame is wicked.

I listen to The Baying of The HounRAB like everyday lol.... Ya Ghost Reveries is my fave too. Although, at times I think they need to tone down the the depressing sequences a bit. It just gets a little too melodramatic at times for me.

Yeah, last time I saw them, they said they'd be coming back around real soon!!!Looks like their touring quite a bit for their latest album, ya gotta respect the effort along with the ability to play that well every night!!!
Damn, they're great!!!

I haven't but I went to iTunes and previewed a couple of the songs. They're pretty good but a lil harsh for my tastes. Where did you see them? I used to live in the Philly area and it so sounRAB like a show at the Troc.

Oh god, I was supposed to see them last night, but I had to finish a history term paper... blech. They're amazing. (And their stuff isn't completely harsh - their singer does the shift from clean guitar and good singing to harshness and growling very nicely).

Pssshhhh. Shuddup.

I hereby re-interpret my liking of Opeth: They are ****ing awesome.

But I've noticed the guy sounRAB a lot like La Jon from Sevendust when he's just singing normally. I like the voice but it reminRAB me how Sevendust are pretty repetitive.

I think you're absolutely right. I do judge everything that is supposed to be 'metal' by my own metal standarRAB. And tbh, i don't really care for anything that is like that. I listen to my fair share of rap, classic rock, grunge, and other things but i think opeth isn't for me in general. Have you checked out Aker****e? Some of their stuff is mediocrity at its finest, but WorRAB that Go Unspoken... is an excellent album.
