Can a Mod change the title to "Opera Mini 3.0 Released" instead of the beta title it has currently? Thanks.

Well.....i went through all this work to make this post and now they have gone and released it officially.

So......Opera Mini 3.0 is available now.

http://mini.opera.com

horrible timing on my part. Sorry for the confusion.

:-(

Main highlights are:
* Secure browsing (advanced version)
* Feed (RSS) preview and aggregation
* Photo upload
* Content folding: automatic folding of long lists of links

The content folding is really cool. I took a couple screenshots and put them on my site. I used HoFo and Myspace as example sites.

Pics and more info on my post here http://pantosh.com/?p=50

Sorry about that rnstar. I took the screenshots yesterday and halfway created the post yesterday. Then today when i got to work i finished it up and posted it. Of course during that time Opera put out the official release to make me look like a retard.

why is Opera better than the orignal nokia browser?

I tried it and for some reason it plays around with the view..u can no longer view a page as u would on ur computer..no side scrolling and it compiles everything into a pile of shi$t if u ask me

you didn't answer my question lol all u said was don't use it..

still wonderin why it's better than the nokia browser that's on the n73

You can't really compare Nokia browser with Opera Mini directly. Nokia browser attempts to render webpages without any changes (ie as you would see them on a computer) while Opera Mini was design to specifically compress and fold the webpages for view on a mobile device. If you want a direct comparision, then you need to look at Opera Mobile which can do both compressed and desktop (like what you see on a computer).

I have a E50 and have used both the Nokia browser and Opera Mini. In terms of usability Opera Mini win hands down. I can best describe it as a gap filler... not a plain text boring WAP brower but not quite the full blown resource hogging web browser. It gives you something inbetween in terms of picture loading capability to keep you entertained just enough. A compromise is the best term of describing it. The new 3.0 version renders pages even faster than the previous version. It also gives you the option to increase or decrease images quality as to save on bandwith and/or loading time.

While the Nokia browser is impressive and I applaud them for making it availabe on their S60 phones, it doesn't make any sense for me to use it personally. Currently the small screen/resolution on cell phones just makes it not very appealing to use the Nokia browser unless you have higher res (N80) or a landscape screen (E61). The Nokia brower just can't handle multimedia rich websites very well (cnn.com, msnbc.com, espn.com) due to the my phone's weak processor and lack of memory. It renders webpages too slow (again due to the weak processor). Even with the E50's 70MB of available memory, I can't even load Nokia's own website without the phone giving me a "out of memory" message.

In the end it all comes down to personal preference. Opera Mini is perfect for web browsing on the go for me. It's perfect for killing time whether you're commuting on the bus/train or shopping at the mall with your significant other. If I want to browse full blown web pages, I'll go home and use my computer or tether my phone with my laptop for data access.

Personally, I think current mobile phones aren't equip in terms of processor and availabe memory to handle any type of full blown web browsing without significant lag. Remember, even with high speed data like EDGE and 3G, it wouldn't make any difference if the CPU in the phone isn't fast enough to process the data. If the CPU is slow, it'll make it seem as if you're on a 56K modem even if you have EDGE or 3G

Thanks, thats the response I was looking for.

You mentioned Opera Mini allows you to see it as desktop view so you can see the page like u see it on ur pc. HOw is this done? I tried playing with the settings and no avail

I like the Nokia browser but one huge failure is the lack of a password manager. How could they do that? I have to now wait for S60v3 FP1 for that? It's almost inexcusable on a $700 phone IMHO. Now I have to buy Opera for $29 to get that functionality.

From what I read, Opera (don't know if it's the Mobile or Mini version) was preinstalled on several older S60 phones. Then Nokia dumped Opera and gave us the Nokia browser.

However if you are going for outright speed, alas with a number of limitation regarding rendering, you really can't go wrong with the Mini.

And trust me, I dislike the mini for those limitations but for speed, even the mighty 3rd browser can't touch it.

After all, you can't compete when you have the webpages being re-rendered on a remote server before they get to you and that is just fact.

Actually most phones up the 6682 came with Opera already installed.
It was not until they switched to 3rd when they dropped it. Which makes sense. Why pay a full license fee when you already have an in house browser pre-installed? Duh.
