Open Water

Um, apart from being called Open Water 2: Adrift (which title was soon amended purely to Adrift as it had nothing to do with the first film), and apart from it being based on a true story involving treading water in the sea, there was no common link between the two movies.

The production companies were different, the directors, writers, producers, photographers, cast etc were all completely different and they were released by two totally different film companies. The script for Adrift was written before Open Water was released at the cinema - and the title of the second movie was amended purely to capitalise on the box office success of the first movie, when it was released on DVD in Germany. Original posters for the movie, and the movie's title in UK, Australia and US, made no reference to Open Water.

It is considered a sequel purely because of the name - it is in no way a sequel in any shape or form. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the first movie, and it is surprising that anybody who had anything to do with Open Water would allow the makers of Adrift to even (temporarily) call it Open Water 2.

Well there you go. I stand corrected....

It is not unusual for low budget success stories to have straight to video sequels that have themic similarities and the same 'protagonist' but none of the same characters and little relation otherwise.

Blair Witch and Wrong Turn immediately spring to mind.

But I guess this is not one of those 'sequels', but simply a film that used the same name as a marketing ploy. My mistake!
